The family news that has taken me 6 months to be ready to share. Here we go.

You know that feeling? The one where you know exactly what you what to say and the word is right there on the tip of your tongue? AH! There is it.

Only the word never comes. No sound. The wrong sound. Not what I meant. And the moment passes. And it happens again. And again. And again and again and again.

As most of you know, this is my son Graham. Graham has Childhood Apraxia of Speech. CAS is a neurological disorder that affects the brain pathways involved in planning the sequence of movements involved in producing speech. The brain knows what it wants to say, but cannot properly plan and sequence the required speech sound movements. It’s not about the muscles not being strong enough. It’s not that he doesn’t understand. It’s that the words don’t come. There’s all of these tiny intricate sidewalks (neural pathways) inside of his incredible mind. Some of the sidewalks are missing pieces. And it takes a lot of laps back and forth to pave each inch of the square foot of unlinked sidewalk. A lot (A LOT) of hard work and a lot of repetition is needed to build the neural pathways.

Prior to August of 2022, I had never heard the word Apraxia. Proactively, we took Graham for a speech evaluation ahead of his second birthday. I figured it would be good to get a head start on some speech therapy. We completed the evaluation. The SLP asked the questions, nodded, jotting notes and circling scores. 1-10. Severe. Not severe. Sounds in his repertoire. We finished the evaluation. She agreed, a delay yes.

And then.

Her best “I’m about to break really hard news to you” voice. “I believe Graham has what is called Childhood Apraxia of Speech.” She made deep eye contact, paused and looked at me as if to say “I’m sorry this load is going to be so heavy.”

This fleeting precious split second moment suspended in time in which Frank gently holds Kirsten’s face and looks in her eyes before kissing her for the first time as her husband. Wrapped in the warm glow of the June Chapel Hill afternoon light beneath a bountiful chuppah adorned with joyful fragrant blooms. In the presence of dearly beloved. The ketubah signed, the rings placed and then the kiss. The beginning of their legacy. Happily ever after.

I have been thinking about the topic of intentionality and slowing down. Amidst the fury of goal setting and pressure to be “better” I am left craving a slower simpler pace. In the spirit of that I am listening to a favorite TED Radio Hour episode from 2014 about happiness. The show asks a simple and powerful question:

I promise if a hurricane lingers your wedding weekend and the sun doesn’t shine and it’s darker earlier than anticipated…I will make it my heart’s mission to find photo magic for you. Still. 🤍I’m not sure how the veil ended up moving like that in this image because it was a true candid of them moving towards transportation/intended to be an honest transition moment. Sorcery must played a role happened because the veil weighed no joke maybe 16 lbs by this point in the day.

The historic villas tucked between two shades of blue, sky and water. The majestic curated hedges and blooming wisteria. The hazy evening “scirocco” sky after the day’s heat met the cool Swiss Alps.
