Not a lot of people talk about the “Spirit of Halloween” in a good way … usually, it's with ghouls and goblins and devils and demons, and we give Halloween a definition of gory scariness. Don't get me wrong, I do love a good ghoul.
What if we saw the Halloween spirit differently? What other day of the year do we answer our doors to strangers and they are welcomed warmly with a smile and delicious treat? In a world that is so often described as “scary” – and rightly so – let us not only choose to see things differently on this day and on every day thereafter.
I’m not suggesting that we just w***y nilly invite strangers into your home, but maybe we could open our hearts a little more to loving others everyday of the year. There are probably people you know that are hiding behind a “mask” of a smile, but inwardly are hurting and isolating in agony. Maybe we could be the ones to lovingly answer their silent pleadings with a treat of warm kindness, rather than a trick of cold indifference.
So in the spirit of this holiday, let us live by choosing every day to love those who come knocking at our door. I hope for each of us, we can answer the call and be there to love, to support and to walk with someone every day, not just on Halloween.
Happy Halloween.
