September 9th was another beautiful day at Donkey Meadows as Traci and Carlos Infante and their family celebrated their daughter, Gracie's 1st birthday! What a great time everyone had! Including the donkeys, the mule and the pig, Ziggy. Traci put together a most beautiful spread of food and drinks for her guests and it was an honor to host this joyous day for them at Donkey Meadows. Am already excited for Gracie's 2nd birthday! Thank you again to the Infante family for choosing Donkey Meadows for your sweet one's special day!

It was another beautiful, fun-filled day at Donkey Meadows, Saturday the 26th. Alyssa turned 5 and wanted to celebrate with the donkeys again. This time was a Hawaiian theme. She really wanted the donkeys to wear grass skirts! I told her I would do my best, but no promises. Shame on me!! The donkeys wore not only the grass skirts, but leis and the girls put up with the scratchy floral headpieces. Poor Hoss had to wear a grass skirt too because I couldn't figure out how to safely design a loin strap! LOL!! Anyway, the donkeys were ridden, the pool was swam in, the piñata was plucked and fun was had by all! Happy 5th Birthday, sweet Alyssa!

Blue Ridge Bible Church wanted a donkey to carry "Mary" into the church for their Christmas Eve service. We had just the donkey, so we thought! Haha, nothing ever goes as planned with animals. Hoss, the black donkey is usually Mr. Confident and Gus, the white donkey is usually more shy. However, in this case Gus was very interested in going in the church. Practice was Thursday and the boys did great. Then came the real deal... Live music, dark building, lots of people all over the place and the boys weren't so excited about walking to the front of the sanctuary. All in all they did an ok job. I just hope the congregation was blessed in some way by the presence of one of God's most amazing animals, the donkey! I hope you all had a blessed Christmas!

So, a week before Thanksgiving I brought home 2 new family members. A friend of mine called me a couple weeks before and pleaded with me to please take in this little donkey and her mule friend for they needed a home since their owners were transferred back to California and couldn't take them. I told her I would think about it. Well, fast forward a few weeks and now I own not just a mule, but a DRAFT mule, a standard donkey and 4 mammoth donkeys. Not to mention the 2 miniature beef steers, 3 pot bellied pigs and few chickens. Anyway, no regrets here. Joe and Julie have wormed their way into our hearts and are loved and accepted as part of the herd. Thank God for my daughter, Kayla, who is a big help and who Julie has claimed for her own. We have once again been blessed by the gift of an animal or in this case animals. Welcome to Donkey Meadows Joe and Julie, your new forever home!

We had beautiful weather for the Fall Farm Tour last weekend! Thank goodness. Donkey Meadows had somewhere close to 600 visitors over the two days combined. We all worked our tails off! Of course, the donkeys were wonderful! I so enjoy talking to all the visitors about the donkeys and answering the many questions. Most folks have never seen a Mammoth donkey before much less ridden one. We have been opening our farm for the Loudoun County Farm Tours now for almost 8 years and this year was the first year that the adult riders just about matched the children riders! I have been inviting the adults for years to ride without many takers, but this year was different!
I can't say enough about my wonderful donkeys, they worked all day both days without a complaint. I wasn't quite sure how my 2 jennies were going to do since this was their first real farm tour. (It rained all day at the spring farm tour) My jennies were very close to Ian, the donkey I lost to cancer in August. Usually, whatever Ian did, they did. I was a bit nervous and missing Ian. However, just like a donkey, the girls picked right up and did their part. They were even better on Sunday than Saturday. I was so proud of them. This year we also had some special needs riders. Those donkeys stood rock solid until that rider was safely on their back and told to walk. I know they knew they were carrying someone extra special. This is another quality I love so much about the donkey. Their intelligence and compassion and loyalty speak so loud. My heart was warmed by the reaction of those special riders, I will be blessed by that for a very long time!
Lastly, a great big THANK YOU to all of you who stopped by and visited the donkeys! We look forward to meeting with you again soon!

Hi all, it's been a long week and a half but I need to update you all on Ian. The last time I posted I was asking for clues as to why my poor mammoth might be urinating blood. After many tests done at the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center last Tuesday, I brought Ian home to wait for results. Not really thinking that things could get worse. Midnight the next night my husband and I had to rush Ian back to the hospital for emergency care. His blood values had dropped and his kidneys were in danger. Thursday, I went to visit Ian, they were giving him fluid support for his kidneys and medicine to help his blood clot. At 1:30 his vet, who is also a good friend of mine, came to see me in his stall and burst into tears. She said it was time to make a decision as to whether or not I was going to give him a blood transfusion, his blood values had once again dropped, this time so low that they were not really compatible with life. Yet, he was still standing. By this time the vets were pretty sure that Ian had bladder cancer. He was bleeding to death and there was not a thing we could do. I was devastated!! I knew I needed to take Ian home so he could live out the rest of his days at home with his friends. The second he jumped off the trailer his demeanor changed, he was so happy to be home, I knew I had made the right decision. That night I was sure I was going to loose my sweet Ian, he looked awful. I went out around midnight to check on him and he was standing out with his herd grazing !!
Ian was alive the next morning and the next and the next...I couldn't believe it. We finally had to put Ian down this past Tuesday, 8-23-16. Being a donkey, he never let me know he wasn't feeling well. It was so hard, I felt like I was putting down a perfectly fine donkey, he still looked so beautiful. I only had Ian for 4 years but he was a very special guy. From the first time I met him, I loved him. He gave me back my confidence with donkeys and taught me more than I can share here. He was always kind, gentle, and did anything I asked of him. Never once did he ever disappoint. Everyone who was lucky enough to meet him loved him. We will miss our sweet Ian so very much !

Hi folks, this is my sweet mammoth donkey, Ian. He is a 11 year old gelding who is as gentle and loving as the day is long. This past friday I discovered he was passing A LOT of blood through his urine. I immediately contacted my vet who came out to pull blood and check him out. She took the blood back to the lab while I stayed with Ian and followed him around with a large cup to try and catch some urine the next time he peed. Well, finally when he did pee again I was able to gather more than enough for the lab to test for all kinds of things. Yesterday I took Ian to see Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald at the Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, VA. There, "Liz" did an ultrasound on Ian's kidneys, then performed a cystoscopy to look inside his bladder, urethra, and anything else she could see up in there. There were no stones, but she did find some abnormal looking tissue on the bladder wall. She took biopsies to rule out cancer. The good news in all this is everything looked normal except that little bit of tissue. The bad news is that Ian is still bleeding and we don't know why. If anyone out there has ever had a donkey, mule or horse that has had the same type symptoms, please, please personal message me. I am really worried about this guy. I can't bear the thought of losing him so young. Any and all prayers would also be greatly appreciated, for our God is a great God and I know He loves the critters too! Thank you so much, Audrey

Every summer Loudoun County Parks and Rec. bring their Hoof and Woof camp by my farm to meet and learn about the donkeys. I love their visits. This is the younger group or "beginners". Our very young possible future farmers and veterinarians. Next week the donkeys will meet the older kids. So much fun for all.

At Donkey Meadows we don't just love our donkeys, we love all kinds of animals. We are lucky enough to be able to help out the little ones who have been abandoned by their Mommas or just need a little extra TLC to get a better start in life. This little guy came to us on June 3rd, only 3 days old. His Momma had no idea what to do with him and did not produce any milk for him. My daughter, Kayla, who is my "mini me" as far as animals go, had let her bus driver know that she was willing to bottle raise any calves needing it from her bus driver's farm. So, "Ferdinand" showed up tiny, adorable and hungry!! I hope you enjoy some of the pictures and videos showing his progress from day one at our farm to his recent interactions with his new barn buddies!
