Yesterday, we worked a wedding where the couple had appointed one of their groomsmen to facilitate a scavenger hunt type of game.

The winners determined the order of tables to be dismissed to the buffet.

The groomsman conducted the scavenger hunt, and then wrote down the table names in order of the winners for me to announce & dismiss.

After calling the last table on the list he had written, one table suddenly yelled “hey what about us?!” - turns out they weren’t on the list!

I’m horrified because who knows where they belonged in the order of winners on the list. They could have easily been among the first to be released - and here they are, the very LAST table to be invited to the meal.

Seeing as the line was still long, I had to think quickly to clear up the confusion, soothe any hard feelings, and somehow make them feel better about waiting just a little bit longer…

…so I walked up to their table and quietly said to them:

“So that you don’t have to stand out in the heat any longer than necessary, let’s wait a couple of minutes.”

To which they responded kindly, but not exactly thrilled…

So I immediately retracted my statement and said…

“You know what… I trust you… why don’t you go ahead whenever you’re ready…”

Their faces lit up as they sighed with relief and smiled saying “thank you!”. It’s as if someone had been choking them and finally let go.

IMHO: unless the couple hired direct-to-table service by a wait staff, trusting wedding guests to help themselves may be the next most dignified approach to a buffet-style wedding dinner. They are adults… they don’t need to be made to feel as though they’re being babysat or held hostage.
