How would you describe your sound (without using genres) in three words? textured, deconstructed, dirty-south

You just finished the perfect set. Your favorite food magically appears —what are you eating? Pho or Ramen

What mindset or energy are you bringing into this mix, and what are you leaving behind before you press play? This mix has been a long time coming, so l approached it naturally and with some special herbs n spices.

What are you currently transmuting in your creative life? Album “MDMJ” dropped August 28th on Intercontinental Ballistic Music. Also, audiovisual studio creations which have yet to be seen by the public.

Sound Distillation was created to promote, preserve, and celebrate underground electronic music through a weekly mix series. Inspired by the alchemical process of distillation~the practice of refining something into its purest essence~each volume captures the essence of an artist’s creative identity, preserving a moment in their musical journey.

Ambient Alchemists: Sound Distillation Vol.019 // Chem XP

About: Chem XP is “an experimental electronic and ambient music project and audiovisual concept created by artist CMDW” according to Google.

However, it is ultimately a concept that amplifies synesthesia, bridging the gap between senses and memories. Chem XP was catalyzed during a time when we were isolated, and the pandemic required us to digitally communicate more creatively. The project followed a long-lasting experimental hip-hop project in Austin, TX, under the moniker “CHAKRA”, which was somewhat limited to english-speaking audiences but had a widespread impact on the ATX scene.
Using less of my own voice, I was able to highlight the narratives of the streets in a more articulate way. As Freud put it, everywhere I go I find a poet has been there before me. Not to say I won’t/don’t still use my own voice, because I do, I’m just at a point where it isn’t the central focus anymore. I used to say that rap verses were the life on the planets of beats, but now I see that life looks different all over the universe.

What does “Sound Distillation” mean to you? Taking all the sounds and influences l’ve absorbed over the years and boiling them down into something that feels like me.

Who are your top 3 EDM influences? DMZ, Kromestar, and Skream

How would you describe your sound (without using genres) in three words? Dark Minimal Underground

You just finished the perfect set. Your favorite food magically appears —what are you eating? The entire menu from Cold Friends Kitchen Cold Friends Kitchen. Every last thing.

What mindset or energy are you bringing into this mix, and what are you leaving behind before you press play? I wanted this one deep, heavy, and sub-driven, but with a relentless pace that keeps evolving from start to finish. I packed over 70 tunes into the mix, keeping the blends tight and the momentum moving while still giving the low end room to breathe. It pulls heavily from the original dubstep sound while mixing in plenty of newer sounds and styles that have pushed it forward.

About: Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Joe Canterbury, known as Joey Darker, has been immersed in dubstep since 2009. Drawn to the darker, deeper side of the sound, his early influences came from pioneers including Skream, DMZ, Benga, Distance, Kromestar, Loefah, and Youngsta.

GetDarker played a major role in shaping that foundation. Through its legendary sets, dubplates, compilations, and interviews, Joe became immersed in the sound and culture of dubstep during an era that would leave a lasting mark on his approach to music.
Inspired by Distance and Darkside’s Indepth Radio series, Joe began DJing in 2018 before moving into production the following year. What started as an extension of his obsession with the music quickly developed into a sound of his own: dark, minimal, and underground, built around heavy low end, space, atmosphere, and soundsystem pressure.

Since then, Joey Darker has steadily built a catalog across both digital and physical formats, releasing music with Frozen Plates, Black Teeth Records, LDH Records, Underground Sound, Sublimate, Erie Sounds, and The Delirium Project. With a forthcoming 10-inch release on ENDZ and a track featured on an upcoming ZOOO Records double-LP compilation, alongside more material on the way, Joe remains focused on carrying forward the foundations of the sound while putting his own stamp on modern 140.
