I attended a dinner party last night hosted by 3rd & Fernwood and Red Rice Books here in Charlotte, NC. This was in honor of the late “unsung chef” Edna Lewis. I had the pleasure of meeting award winning culinary writer and historian Deb Freeman. We viewed and discussed her executive produced documentary, “Finding Edna Lewis.”We also dined on a curated dinner, performed by James Beard-nominated chef Greg Collier and his restaurant team. The menu was inspired by Ms. Lewis’s recipes and several local black farmers’ seasonal ingredients. The night was filled with intimate conversation regarding Ms Lewis’s legacy, the history of Southern foods/cuisine (how it ties into black culture), and why the story needs to be written and told.
