It’s too hot for covers—
but flowers still bring a little cool to the room.

This is the Barely Cinched vase, styled for late summer.
A little unruly, a little refined. Just the way I like it.

The Week We Used to Take Off

When I had full-time staff, the big loft studio, 75+ events a year—I used to close the studio twice a year so we could all have a (paid) break.
Usually the week around Christmas to New Year, and again around July 4th.

Chewie doesn’t need PTO, but I still find myself longing for that pause.

Between restocks.
Between projects.
Between family commitments.

But it’s just me, most of the time these days.
If I don’t post, there’s no posts.
If I don’t send emails, there’s no emails.

Before the vases were for sale, they were just mine.
I wasn’t even sure they’d become a product line.

They were a creative challenge—something I made for myself.
I shared them as part of my life. How I arranged with them.
How they came to be, glazed at The Clay Studio,
filled with garden flowers I cut just because I could.

That was when sharing felt easy. When Instagram felt like a place to simply show up and see what other florists around the world were working on.

Lately I wonder if I’m just spending too much time alone.
Too much time in my own head.
Worrying I’m doing it wrong while also feeling like I’m not doing enough.

You can’t turn it off when it’s all yours.
When you know what it could be—
and a million things get in the way,
especially the ones far beyond your control.

It’s okay to take a break.
To rest.

(I’m saying that to myself as much as anyone else.)

Some highlights from the first few weeks of peony bloom season—late April to early May, 2025.

While I’m not a patient person by nature, the plants—and their brief but stunning bloom periods—have been well worth the time and money invested.

I consider myself a collector of plants that thrill me, inspire me, and make me wander the garden daily, searching for signs of blooms. Flowers that make me run back to the greenhouse for clippers so I can cut an armful and highlight just one special stem.

While you’ll sometimes see folks sharing resources they just “discovered” for content, those of us who truly collect have always shared sources for great-quality, uniquely beautiful plant material—freely and with plenty of encouragement.
I’ve always found the plant forums at garden.org to be a fabulous (and free) resource.

My peonies have been sourced from all over, collected over the last seven years from independent growers and breeders—but these are the ones I always watch for when winter catalogs go live.
The best time for peony root planting is fall—about six weeks before your first frost. They need that cold period (vernalization) to bloom well.

Sources I recommend:
Solaris Farms

After 15 years designing in everything from $5 thrifted vases to $14,000 one-of-a-kind crystal pieces, I made my flagship vase Draped No.1 over the past year. All the vases I’ve selected over the years for my clients are beautiful and special, whether 40-year-old milk glass or painstakingly made by master craftspeople around the world. Perhaps it’s because I’ve used thousands of commercially available vases over the years that I made my vases so differently.

My vases have a superpower: they are created for the flowers they hold—not the other way around.

Draped No.1 is a closed limited edition. Only 20 pieces met my standards for sale, and the mold broke. It will never be restocked. The first pieces 1-5 are available in this early June release, the remainder will be available in the Fall just in time for dinner plate dahlias, abundant fall branches and berries, or evergreen boughs.

it’s no secret Barely Cinched is my most used vase but this time of year it really shines, all these arrangements were cut from my garden, with a few local beauties from sprinkled in. Join the List to shop early Thursday 6/5

Before it was Barely Cinched, it was a class exercise in complex mold making—way back in 2020.
I’m having a love affair with this vase. It’s been with me the longest, and it’s so easy to reach for when spring (and the rain) have me cutting armfuls of flowers daily.
Be sure you’re on the List to hear when the next restock date is announced—along with the full story of Barely Cinched, glimpses into the debut of Draped No.1, and lots of inspiration. [link in bio]

cutting from the garden this week has felt like more of a rescue mission to save the blooms from the rain. Barely Cinched remains my most used vase, perfect for when you’re grabbing handfuls of blooms. PS the stars of this show are Summer Glow peony, Friendly Advice bearded iris, Belinda’s Blush roses

An all green brief might sound less than exciting but looking back, all I see now is the way that these arrangements make me think about the garden. How when working with so much green you need to pay more attention to leaf shapes, texture and of course shades of green.
