Long before I ever formally met Matt Weafer, I already felt like I knew him. I used to watch him on the local TV channel, hosting his cooking show, giving viewers a rare look behind the curtain of the higher-end restaurant world. It wasn’t flashy and didn't seem scripted, it was real. You got to see the back end of fine dining, the discipline, the creativity, the standards, and the passion it takes to do things the right way. I genuinely enjoyed those episodes, because they felt educational and honest, not just entertainment.
But television was just the introduction.
Matt Weafer’s impact on my family and this community goes much deeper. He gave my daughter her first job at Niko's Bakery and Cafe. Then, when the time came, he gave her, her second job at Sassafras. Those weren’t just paychecks; they were opportunities. Places where work ethic, standards, and pride mattered. To this day when we finish eating at a restaurant she "buses" the table and stacks all the plates and cups exactly like she learned at Sassafras. Every time! As a parent, you never forget who gives your child their first real chance. (his brother actually gave my youngest son his first job at Fetta)
Fast forward to a conversation I had while sitting down with the owner of 54 Pizza. In the middle of talking food, she casually mentioned that their bread recipe, the one people love, was Matt Weafer’s recipe. That alone says something. But what came next is what pushed Matt into legendary status in my mind.
I later talked to Matt about it, and he explained the situation simply, almost humbly:
“A local business reached out to me a while back when the supplier of their bread stopped making it. I wrote a recipe that matched what she asked for, and we were making their bread for a while. At the time, we were selling a lot of wholesale bread to local places. We scaled that back. But instead of leaving them empty-handed with no bread again, I just gave them the recipe and trained them on how to make it so they could take care of it in-house and not worry about losing a supplier again.”
Let that sink in.
In a world and especially in business where profits are often put before people, where guarding recipes and protecting margins is the norm, Matt chose something different. He chose kindness, community, and wanting others to succeed.
That is unheard of.
That’s leadership.
That’s confidence in your craft.
That’s believing there’s room for everyone at the table.
Matt Weafer isn’t just a talented chef. He isn’t just a mentor. He isn’t just someone who’s touched a lot of kitchens in this town.
He’s a true legend not because of what he kept for himself, but because of what he gave back to those who relied on him at the moment!
