LONG POST
🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫
Anonymous: Hey Andrina, I love your work. I’ve purchased several of your templates, I’m so ready to start this journey!
Me: Thank you so much for your support! I wish you nothing but blessings you got this.
Fast forward 2 weeks…
Anonymous: Hey Andrina, I hope you see this message soon. I showed a client some of your work and she wants to order 50 purses, she needs them by next week, but I’ve never made them and I don’t know how much to charge. Please help ASAP, she’s waiting for the quote.
Me: … closes message, puts phone down, walks away 😳
Now let me explain this might sound a little rude, but y’all know I’m blunt:
• 🚫Stop playing with people’s money if you don’t know what you’re doing.
• 🚫Stop taking orders on something you’ve never made and have zero experience with.
• Yes, I’ve done items for clients I’ve never posted before BUT they were in the same category as things I already knew how to make. Example: If someone asks for custom playing card boxes, I’ll say yes because I already know how to design templates and assemble similar items.
• 🚫You cannot run your business on someone else’s time waiting for me to stop what I’m doing so I can figure out your supply cost, overhead, hourly rate, and design fee is not how this works.
🚫Before the “this is why newbies don’t ask for help” comments roll in…
I’ve said this over a million times there is NO magic formula or “special sauce” for pricing.
No one can give you a base price because:
• We all live in different states.
• Our supply costs are different.
Pricing takes time, but it’s a must for every business owner.
Example:
• 10 sheets of cardstock cost $15 → each sheet is $1.50.
• Embellishments cost $13 for 24 pieces → each one is about $0.55.
• How long will it take to cut, assemble, and glue?
• How much do you want to be paid per hour?
• Did you design it? Add your design fee.
• Are you charging by the dozen? If so, figure out the cost for ONE item, then multiply by 12 to get your price per dozen.
Don’t forget your overhead:
• Glue, tape, glue sticks
• Cutting machine blades/mats
• Shipping costs: box, tape, airbags/bubble wrap, tissue paper, labels
• Anything else that gets used up while making or shipping the product
Bottom line: Learn your numbers before you take orders. That’s part of running a business and it’s how you make sure you’re not working for free.
