So much of the business of tabletop at Frances Lane is about moving the past into the present to create beautiful memories for the future. That could not happen without the many mothers whose hands cared for family both in the past and in the present. Often, people gift me their family heirlooms because they know, as I do, that those pieces will grace another table as full of meaning as the tables they originated from. I have Miss Catherine’s Sunday China, Miss Reba’s favorite Limoges and Miss Melanie’s Italian Spode, just to name a few. I am privileged to be the keeper and sharer of family memories. As I wash the pieces ( and yes, my hands wash and polish each piece) I contemplate the role that women’s hands have in caring for families, their role in creating beauty through family dinners and the camaraderie of cleaning up after dinner and I’m happy knowing that the work I do carries on.
On this Mother’s Day, it is my wish that your hands will have the opportunity to set a table full of love, care, compassion and beauty for the people you love and care for.
