Had the most wonderful afternoon Between the extraordinary home for its archive and the new, technologically advanced Doris Duke Theatre they embrace past and future seamlessly in this storied space. Behind me ( behind this gorgeous garden) is the porch where we used to warm up before class. Memories....

Faith Bernhardt (nee Luria) was born 100 years ago today. She left us too early -almost 19 years ago - so she missed seeing her grandchildren growing up into wonderful adults. She was an early feminist ( she let me go to school in pants when on a cold day when girls only wore skirts.) and even though she was actually shy, she was there to help family, friends and neighbors whenever they asked (and she was the extended family nurse). She encouraged me to be adventurous, for which I am forever grateful. The tiger lilies and hydrangeas in my backyard remind me of her. Thanks Mom

Small acts of resistance. My horrible neighbor poisoned the beautiful ivy and carefully trained wisteria that had been growing all over our side of the ugly fence that divides our property. I can't say how angry and sad this little violation made me. Especially the wisteria. I just discovered this little late blooming survivor. I'm not sure this is a metaphor for anything but maybe.

My Ikebana teacher Asae Takahachi says that we are "bringing nature into a container ". This morning I think I got it. I trimmed a wayward branch off my dogwood tree. Had to find the right vase. This one is from a set my son ._gio gave me for Channuka. I've never used it til now. Couldn't figure out the right match. But it is exactly the right partner for this dogwood branch. And don't think I just "plopped it in! Some maneuvering and quite a lot of leaf editing (see 2nd photo). I'm pleased by this duet. Go make some duets with flowers and containers. Very calming.

Amidst the horrors of the news I get to " leave the world behind" for 90 minutes with my students and teach flower design at the this was the 2nd of my three part series and we worked with various " mechanics" including agrawool ( the compostable alternative to that green toxic stuff called Oasis) and chicken wire in order to make arrangements in unusual containers. These two talented women stayed "afterschool" to complete their gorgeous designs. Next week we're making tablescapes in small groups. Can't wait to see what folks bring in...

Be-spoke arrangements/calm, creative classes in flower design
Elise Bernhardt started Fleur Elise Bkln in part so she could keep going to the flower market, one of the last “districts” of its kind in NYC. Her experience studying Ikebana in Tokyo was a turning point in her approach to creating and teaching flower design.
Bernhardt’s studied choreography with Bessie Schonberg . She likes to say, “Flowers are like dancers, only quieter.” They need space, light, room to stretch and bend, a place to be themselves AND in relation to others. She also produced site-specific performances for many years and the same rules of composition apply, albeit on a smaller scale. The container and the setting dictate much about how the flowers are arranged.
Every Fleur Elise Bkln arrangement is one-of-a-kind. As the client, you share your preferences - what colors you like (or don’t), what flowers you like, and if you have a vase that you want to use, we will adapt our creation to it.
Bernhardt further combined her experience as a long-time Executive of non-profits and her passion for flowers. She offers TEAM BUILDING THROUGH FLORAL DESIGN WORKSHOPS which are incredibly effective at helping corporate and non-profit groups get to bond, collaborate and learn about each other’s individual creative styles.
