Washington Square Park Folk Festival

Washington Square Park Folk Festival The Washington Square Park Folk Festival takes place annually in mid September in Greenwhich Village's Washington Square Park, NY, NY, NY. Free admission!

The Washington Square Park Folk Festival was founded in 2011 by then park’s administrator Becky Ferguson and music producer Eli Smith. The festival celebrates and continues the long tradition of folk music performance in Greenwhich Village’s legendary Washington Square Park. This tradition goes all the way back to the 1940’s and the birth of Folk music in New York City, with the likes of Woody Gut

hrie and Pete Seeger coming together on Sunday afternoons to play music and socialize in the park. This tradition continued up through the 1960’s where folk music in the park welcomed a young Bob Dylan to the folk music scene in the city, and it continues up until today.

Lucy Brown Karwoski is pictured here with Mississippi John Hurt in a photograph taken decades ago. Lucy still has a sweet smile and, this weekend, she enjoyed hearing Hurt's music played by some performers at the Washington Square Park Folk Festival. Hurt played music in that park in the 60s and it was special having Lucy at the festival.

Happy Tuesday! The annual Brooklyn Folk Festival, produced by Jalopy Theatre and School of Music, strives to showcase folk music traditions from all around the world, not just from the US. This year's fest we were lucky to have Mamady Kouyate and his Mandingo Ambassadors, music from Guinea, available locally, but in past fests we've been able to bring special guests from overseas, and we hope to do so again for future BFFs! Your tax-deductible contribution of $1000 brings a band to the Brooklyn Folk Festival!
