As many of you know, our documentary film Sundays at Café Tabac is a project I care deeply about. To say it has been a labor of love would be an understatement. No one warned me that making an independent documentary film could take years to complete — filled with anxious, sleepless nights spent navigating the emotional and often arduous process. But we are finally nearing the finish line, and I’m incredibly grateful that Karen and I never gave up.
As creators of an independent le***an documentary, funding has often been elusive. We’ve relied on crowdfunding, fiscal sponsorship, private donations, and community fundraisers to keep the project moving forward. At times, production has slowed or paused altogether while we applied for grants, cared for our families and personal lives, and showed up to our day jobs to pay the bills.
Through it all, we have been sustained by the support of our community — our friends, collaborators, and life partners. This film would not exist without community, and community is truly the heart of this story.
For those asking what comes next: we are currently digging through archival materials, compiling community photographs and historical images, clearing copyrights, and continuing through post-production. Our upcoming fundraiser on June 14th, will help support this complex and vital stage of the filmmaking process and bring us one step closer to completing the film. More details to come this week!
I cannot wait to share this passion project with all of you. It will mean everything to finally sit together in a room and experience the film collectively. We’re getting there. Thank you.
