FESTIVAL PRODUCTION 101: THE BONEYARD

As we approach fall festival season, here's one of those areas guests will probably never see—but production teams know can make or break an efficient build.

The boneyard.

It's the behind-the-scenes home for barricades, fencing, road cases, equipment, signage, tools, spare materials and all the other pieces needed to keep a festival moving.

But a boneyard shouldn't just be the place where we throw everything we aren't using.

A good one is planned, organized, accessible and secure.
When it's done right, crews know where things are, equipment can move efficiently, inventory is easier to manage, and valuable labor hours aren't spent searching for something that should have had a home in the first place.

And remember—the boneyard changes throughout the event. What empties during load-in starts filling right back up during strike.

Build it into the site plan. Give everything a home.
Fall festival season is coming. Let's get to work.

From Rendering to Reality.

One of my favorite parts of this work is watching an idea go from a screen to something people can actually walk up to, touch, photograph and experience.

The final product is only the last step.

Before that comes the idea. The sketches. The renderings. Different versions. Measurements. Material selections. Budget adjustments. Internal fabrication. Problem solving. A few pivots. And a team figuring out how to actually build what we imagined.

For GAP Fest, we were able to take several ideas from concept through fabrication and installation, and it's always rewarding to stand back at the end and see the plan come together in real life.

The tools available to creatives and event professionals are changing quickly, and I'm always interested in learning how other people are building.
