Mardi Gras originated in medieval Europe as a time of celebration before Lent. The tradition was brought to Louisiana by French settlers in the late 17th century. Today, Mardi Gras is a colorful festival in New Orleans.
Origins
The word Mardi Gras comes from the French words Mardi which means "Tuesday" and gras which means "fat".
The first official Mardi Gras celebration was held in Mobile, Alabama in 1703.
The first Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans was in 1857.
Celebrations
Mardi Gras is celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.
The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold.
The tradition of throwing beads and other trinkets from parade floats into crowds is called "throws".
Mardi Gras in New Orleans
Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans have been canceled a dozen times, mostly due to wars.
In 2021, many in-person celebrations and parades in New Orleans were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
