Mardi Gras has a rich history in Pensacola, dating back to its time as part of the Louisiana Territory. Although the celebrations ceased in 1927 and remained dormant for fifty years, the spirit of Mardi Gras has always thrived in the city.

In 1977, Mardi Gras made a triumphant return to Pensacola. The Pensacola Chamber of Commerce formed a committee that brought together over half a dozen energetic bands, several bluegrass groups, and the University of West Florida Black Gospel Singers. This revival allowed the residents of Pensacola to once again revel on Palafox Street, reigniting the festive atmosphere that defines Mardi Gras in the area.

During parades, there is a Sidewalk Side and a Neutral Ground Side. The Neutral Ground Side is the (usually) grassy median running between lanes of traffic on an avenue - also where the streetcar tracks are. The Sidewalk Side is the side with... The sidewalk. This is important because you'll hear locals say something like "I'll be Uptown between Seventh & Eighth on the Sidewalk Side."
