It's officially fall, which means the beginning of cooler weather, muted colors, and harvests. Fall displays give us a chance to extend color and showcase all the hard work local farms and growers take to grow some really fantastic pumpkins, gourds and flowers.

Fall is my favorite season. Not just because of sweater weather (although that does give fall a twig up as best season) but because there is still so much activity. We spotted this Great Spangled Fritillary out on a walk with our dogs. Jim noticed it first, I was distracted on my phone. That seems to be a bit of a trend for me lately. But when he pointed it out, it made me realize how much I miss when I’m supposed to be enjoying the best time of year. Fall tells you to slow down, breathe in the beginning of the seasonal senescence, and to be more like this little fritillary.

Is fall your favorite season?

I am burrowing into the puffy pillow of peak dahlia season. Inevitably fall will be here and they'll have to be put to bed for the winter. After that, the thought of these brightly colored ladies is going to rest on my mind until February... when it's time to purchase more and increase the collection. For now, I'm going to enjoy every moment.

Vernonia, a late summer bloomer, friendly host to end of season pollinators and (as you can see here) quite a statement! Let her grow wild in an open, fairly wet meadowy area as she's a bit of a flirt! (For context, I'm about 5'4!)

Sometimes drought tolerant plants are just what you need… This season has been exceptionally DRY here in the Berkshires and Capital Region. Every time it looks like it might rain, it somehow goes all around us leaving us in our little bubble of rock hard soil and dripping humidity. Worth it, if only just for these happy gals. .international

This palette is one of my favorites from this year. The soft tones play off one another, forming a rosey-hued rainbow of coleus, vinca, colocasia, New Guineas, fuchsia and begonias and ending in a silvery pillow of Dichondra. Most of these I’ve grown before, but the Fuchsia magellanica ‘Versicolor’ was new to me and she did not disappoint. Hopefully the hummingbirds have been enjoying her as much as I have!
