Jeff Speakman: The Martial Arts Master Hollywood Traded for Keanu Reeves

Long before he was positioned as Hollywood’s next breakout martial artist, Jeff Speakman was a kid waiting for the bus at 5:30 AM in the freezing Chicago winter just to make it to training. Inspired by the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, he fell head over heels for martial arts—eventually selling his car to move to California and track down Ed Parker, the legendary founder of American Kenpo.

In 1991, Speakman starred in The Perfect Weapon, a cult hit that delivered the most authentic cinematic display of rapid-fire Kenpo ever put on screen. Paramount Pictures immediately groomed him to be their answer to Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal.

Then, studio politics altered his entire path:

A sudden change in executive leadership at Paramount canceled Speakman's multi-picture contract.

A project developed for him was sold without his knowledge. That film hit theaters in 1994 as Speed—with Keanu Reeves stepping into the lead role and skyrocketing to A-list superstardom.

Rather than chasing Hollywood validation, Speakman shifted his focus back to his true passion: mastering and teaching American Kenpo.

In 2013, Speakman faced his toughest fight off-screen when he was diagnosed with throat cancer. After enduring grueling treatments and beating the disease, he shared a powerful perspective on what truly matters:

"It was a coin toss whether I would survive or not. Life is very short, even in the best of circumstances. Don't make your life about the pursuit of money, possessions, and social media clicks. It has been, is, and always will be the content of your character that matters."

In July 2022, at age 63, Speakman was awarded his 10th degree Black Belt (10th Dan)—the highest possible rank in American Kenpo Karate.

Hollywood may have missed out on an action icon, but the martial arts world gained a true, lifelong master.

I came across more men then women who doesn’t have the balls to stand up to their partner in regards to being controlled. It’s amazing how much torture & suffering people are willing to tolerate for the sake of thinking it’s healthy for their own children to witness. I am so glad I will never jeopardize my own freedom for any type of peace. That’s why the right partner will have trust and understanding, not insecurity & judgement. People who are too scared to chase their real happiness are pu***es.

I got my bike license and began riding at age 25. In 2007, around that time gas prices were getting up to about $5 a gallon & a lot of people were turning towards riding to save money on gas as well as it was nice to beat traffic as I was attending school at night and working full time at the dealership during the day. In CA, u are allowed to lane share vs Tennessee u aren’t.

I had 2 bikes. My 2007 Yamaha Virago got repoed while my 2010 Honda Shadow Aero was returned to my ex, James Mullendore after breaking up with him as I didn’t want anything tied with him. It’s been over 15 years since I have ridden, & I’m eyeing what my next bike should be when I am ready to ride again. Indian has been a fascination & I heard good things about them. Seeing this bad boy caught my eye. Life changes, time flies, energy always shifts, and the goals of manifesting those things u been spiritually trying to achieve are slowly coming true 1 by 1.

I always went after the things I want. Each goal I have reached, I work on the next one. It’s almost never ending, but it shows that going after what u want may never be impossible if u know how to get there and u don’t give up. I have survived abusive relationships when men have tried to control or destroyed me, I have escaped and survived, I have left CA, was left to fend for myself and homeless, worked hard and a lot of overtime, sued my brother and got the inheritance money was owed, got my own place again, brought back everything from CA and closed the storage unit, busted ass as Clerk, Mail Handler, Custodian, & now Mechanic. Now I gotta get ahead of the game and see if I can get promoted again.

Back to busting ass again training/learning mentally & physically once again….One way or another, I will get to where I truly need to be & Father Almighty has been here taking care of me the entire time.
