Did you know one of Pittsburgh’s sweetest wedding traditions was born out of necessity?

The Pittsburgh Cookie Table traces its roots back to the Great Depression, when elaborate wedding cakes were often too expensive for many families. In Western Pennsylvania’s immigrant communities (especially Italian, Polish, Slovak, and other Eastern European families) mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and neighbors came together to bake dozens of homemade cookies for wedding receptions.

What started as a practical way to celebrate quickly became a cherished tradition. Today, cookie tables are overflowing displays of family recipes, treasured memories, and homemade treats, often featuring hundreds (or even thousands!) of cookies for guests to enjoy.

More than just dessert, a Pittsburgh Cookie Table is a symbol of community, love, and the generations of family members who help make a wedding day special. ❤️🍪
