Come see Hill Folk Herbal Farms at the Sip N Sprout Social in Morehead!!

Last night we made a batch of horehound cough drops, and the experience reminded us that some of the best herbal traditions are also some of the most enjoyable.

Using horehound, wild cherry bark, and mullein leaf from our herbal apothecary, we prepared a strong herbal infusion and combined it with brown sugar, sorghum, and a touch of cream of tartar. As the mixture slowly transformed into a rich amber syrup, the kitchen filled with the aroma of old-fashioned herbal candy making.

What surprised us most was how much fun the final step became.

Instead of pouring the candy into molds, we spooned small portions onto wax paper laid across baking sheets. As the candy cooled and began to harden, we rolled each piece into small balls by hand and gently flattened them with a butter knife. Every cough drop became slightly different from the next, just the way handmade herbal remedies have been made for generations.

The result was something neither store-bought nor copied from a commercial recipe. The bitterness of the horehound was softened by the sweetness of the sorghum, while the wild cherry bark added depth and the mullein leaf brought its traditional place in respiratory herbalism. The finished drops were firm, flavorful, and carried the unmistakable character of a handcrafted remedy.

Perhaps the greatest lesson of the evening was that herbalism is more than reading about plants. It is growing them, harvesting them, preparing them, and sharing them with others. It is learning through experience.

Our recipe may have started with traditional horehound candy, but by the end of the evening it had become our own, born from experimentation, laughter, and a willingness to learn by doing.

In a world filled with information, there is still something special about gathering around a stove, stirring a kettle, and turning herbs from the garden into something useful with your own hands.

The cough drops turned out beautifully, but the experience was even better.

CALLING ALL CURRENT AND PROSPECTIVE GREEN THUMBS!

The Painted Hills Garden Club is Hosting the 4th Annual Heart & Soil Garden Fest this weekend at the Morehead Conference Center. Enjoy informational sessions, lots of vendor booths and more this Saturday, June 6 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Please see the update below from Club President Dee Biebighauser.

The past year has been a good one for the Painted Hills Garden Club. We have almost doubled our membership and are continuing to create partnerships with local volunteer groups. Last month we had seven volunteers from Morehead State University Evergreen; a group of students that focuses on diverse environmental and social justice initiatives. They were a huge help at Fountain Park picking up debris, edging garden beds, and helping with the constant removal of invasive plant species. We have also started working more closely with the City of Morehead and Parks and Recreation on the trimming of trees, clearing of underbrush, and removal of unwanted plants.

Our largest community project is the maintenance of our Monarch Waystation at the Main Street end of Fountain Park. We have several species of milkweed, native plants, flowering shrubs, and great nectar-producing annuals in that space. There are several native plants that have spread dramatically that we are trying to reign in to make space for more nectar plants. Invasive plants that we are trying to remove are English Ivy, Bush Honeysuckle, Privet, Poison Ivy, Creeping Charlie, a very aggressive grass, Violets, Bedstraw, Buttercups, and Orange Daylilies. These are also known as Ditch Lilies.

Our Heart & Soil Garden Fest is our second largest community project. We are so excited to be hosting our 4th Annual event. We will again be at the Morehead Conference Center at 111 East 1st Street. An informative variety of programs will be offered throughout the day.

Angie Claytos, owner of Angie’s Buds and Blooms will share information on “How to Create Beautiful Planters” with lush and diverse plantings.

Terry Stamper will be back by request to discuss “Trees, The Miracle Above Our Heads”.

Chef Jerry Hart will educate us about “Cooking with Herbs”.
Amanda Potter, our UK Extension Agent, will present a program on “Deer Resistant Gardening”.

Charlie Charles will share information about “Beekeeping in Education” which will not only talk about beekeeping but will share information on beekeeping within our Rowan County School System.

There will again be Vendors, door prizes, a Silent Auction, and plants for sale. Many of our vendors this year are new to this event. We have Ash Gilliam with Retired Duck Soap, Kathy York with Yorks Corks, Cherie Caulley with Creative Cross Stitch, Liz Stamper with Arts & Crafts, Lori McAlister with Slate Creek Creations, Kristie White with Cake It or Leave It, Joanna Kirby with Garden Tools, Liz Bowman with Creative Jewelry, and more.

This year we have added some live music with the very talented Liz Bowman singing some short sets. It will be a fun and informative experience. Please join us on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Morehead Conference Center from 10:00 to 4:00. If you would like to be a vendor, contact Dee at 606 356 6445. We are still looking for a couple of food trucks as well.

Submitted, Dee Biebighauser 606-356-6445
