Fall product highlight: Mums 🌼
Buckle up - it was a wild ride….I had numerous folks say how easy mums were to grow & sell. So why not give it a try! I placed a plug order, then called my old friend, Jason Davis, to see what I was getting myself into. “They aren’t easy per se, but once you crack the code on what to do, they will do well.” I took tons of notes from his advice, then got to work!
Aubri Austin was interning with me for the summer and this became her final project for school! Safe to say, we trauma bonded over these mums 😂 520 plugs were potted by hand. We set them out. We fertilized. We watered. Then, we started noticing issues….
Our initial plan was to space them between my existing peonies since we had a huge space of fabric already there & simply water overhead. It sounded good on paper! What we didn’t consider was while the chickens were drinking & the cool cells running, there wasn’t enough pressure to successfully run all my sprinklers. We also didn’t recognize the excess water for 3 months may cause my peonies to rot 🫠 While most of the pots were level, some were tilted, which will make the mum grow sideways. So, we soon aborted that plan and Barney scraped me a level area.
I rush ordered Netafim watering bulk tubing & parts. Barney and I made an assembly line and I chopped each poly tube (520…) by hand. Took us only 3 days to lay fabric, install the water lines, and move all the mums. We were tired, ya’ll.
While they aren’t perfect, I’m so proud to see them bloom. Given our trials - all our mums are only $7 each. Maybe I’ll try them again next year….maybe not 😅
But Aubri had a heck of a final project to discuss the importance of trying new things, yet knowing to pivot when challenges arise.
