“HARD TIMES REQUIRE FURIOUS DANCING.” — Alice Walker

On Saturday, March 14th, The Men’s Room returns. And now that we’re settling into our home for the time being (we’ll be at the same space as the last two parties), we’ll be dimming the lights a little lower and turning up the music a little louder so we can all feel the release we so need.

Donations will be made to both the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) and UCLA MN to support the ongoing work protecting our immigrant, q***r, and trans family.

Your music will be curated by residents: Afro, Dean Frisby & Pour Hommes.

Saturday, March 14th · 9pm–3am · The Men’s Room · Minneapolis

$20 cash or Venmo at the door (no advance tickets for this)

In honor of Black History Month, we’re moved by an incredible collection of found images. Hidden in the Open: Photographic Essay of Afro-American Male Affections, curated by Houston playwright and historian Trent Kelley, brings together nearly two hundred photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that capture Black men in moments of closeness—standing shoulder to shoulder, hands resting on one another, bodies leaning in. The images don’t try to label every relationship or force a clear definition. Instead, they make space for affection, friendship, and intimacy as they existed in plain sight. Some of the men in these photographs were surely gay; others may not have been. What matters is that these moments were recorded intentionally and without fear or shame. Through small, careful gestures—touch, proximity, quiet tenderness—the work reveals how gay Black men, in particular, documented their connections within the limits of their time. As Kelley writes, “Historically, the Afro-American gay male and couple have largely been defined by everyone but themselves… Afro-American gay men are ignored into nonexistence in parts of black culture and are basically second-class citizens in gay culture.” (If anyone knows the handle of Mr. Kelley, pls DM us 🖤)
