“My name is Viktorya, but you can call me V or Tory. I am a sophomore at Milwaukee School of Languages, where I am a full Spanish student and have been since elementary school. I became an Agricultural Apprentice because I worked with Teen Grow Greens last year and I really enjoyed my time working in the gardens and having new experiences in nature where I could actually plant something and watch it grow. I’m excited to learn more about planting, especially with flowers, herbs, and vegetables, mostly because I’ve always wanted to have my own garden and to be able to create such beautiful things that earth can provide with just a little bit of help from me.”

“My name is Shamonie, I am a junior at Carmen High School where I am excelling in all my classes. At Carmen, I also participate in afterschool activities like cheerleading and student council. I became an Apprentice at Webers Greenhouse to learn more about agriculture. I’m excited to learn about the different types of plants I can grow here in Milwaukee. I want to continue working with Teens Grow Greens to provide healthy food for the people in our community. In the future, I want to be a successful veterinarian.”

‘’My name Is Jaden, I am a graduate of Riverside Highschool, and currently enrolled at MATC to become a dental hygienist. I became an agricultural apprentice three years ago, after graduating from the internship. TGG has given me the skills I needed to succeed. I am currently also working as a oral surgeon assistant so that I can gain experience in the dental field.’’

“My name is Kyla. I am a sophomore at Pathways High. I became an Apprentice because I wanted to continue to learn and grow with the help of TGG. I had such an amazing experience with the nine-month internship that I knew I wanted to continue to be a part of TGG, simply because they have helped me grow as an individual and young black woman. I have gained so much knowledge and now I have the opportunity to put that knowledge to good use and help others in my community. I’m excited to learn more about planting, customer service, greenhouses, and much more! I want so much for Milwaukee because we are one of the most segregated cities in America and the simplest things can bring communities together. A community that learns together grows together. In the future I want to be the one teaching younger kids about growing plants and healthy living and eating. I want to take the opportunity I was given and put my knowledge to use on younger generations!”

My name is Nay Thaw lay Moo. I was a TGG Intern in 2019 when I was in my junior year in high school and became a Greenhouse Apprentice in the greenhouse following my senior year. Currently, I am in the first year of college and I’m glad to be working with TGG as an Apprentice in the greenhouse again. I would like to be able to learn even more about plants and eventually help teach others about the importance of being green. I hope that the city of Milwaukee will be able to incorporate green infrastructure into their city design so it will help with the environment. In the future, I want to help mentor teens and teach them the importance of being green.

Teens Grow Greens Take Over Weber’s Greenhouses

With the Grand Opening of Teens Grow Greens at Webers Greenhouses, Teens Grow Greens will continue to grow in three major ways:

First, Teens Grow Greens will grow “A Home Base for Innovation.” Weber’s provides an experiential learning facility where the Teens in our programs can practice their agricultural and entrepreneurship skills. The experiential learning facility inspires Teens to grow individually, but also as an entrepreneur. This year, Travon, a 2017 Graduate of Teens Grow Greens, plans to set up a small cafe in the greenhouse to sell his entrepreneurship product, Joe Veggie Go to Webers’ customers. Travon is here today, visit his table to learn more about his great product.

The second way that Teens Grow Greens will grow is in the post-graduation support provided to Teens. From check-ins and surveys, we found that many Graduates wanted to continue employment with Teens Grow Greens after they graduated from the nine-month internship. The Graduates desired to utilize the skills they developed in the internship while maintaining the relationships with staff and other Teens in the program.

Teens Grow Greens also plans to grow its community connections and become a “Community Hub.” Teens Grow Greens will hold a visioning session in October with community, business and non-profit leaders to discuss how Weber’s can best serve not only the mission of Teens Grow Greens, but also the needs of the community.

Can’t wait for Webers Greenhouse to be full of costumers again. Opening day is May 1st, hope to see you there!
May is fast approaching and Webers Greenhouse is starting to look like Spring thanks to TGG Ag team, staff and Apprentices alike! Weber’s Greenhouse is open to the public May 1st, we’re excited to see everyone! #teensgrowgreens #mke #buildwaukee #wegrowmorethanplants
Our Agriculture Apprentices first day back at Webers Greenhouse! Give them a follow if you’re not already to watch along as Apprentices prep for Weber’s 2022 Spring opening.
You are invited! Join us for year two of the WIC Gardening Program Series, #growfoodwithwic! Learn about various topics related to gardening and the benefits of eating fruits and vegetables you grow yourself. A yard or expensive set-up not required. Use pots or grow bags on a porch or by a sunny window. Get creative! Garden beds are nice if you have the space. Check out the Victory Garden Initiative Garden Blitz for reduced pricing on fully installed garden beds for qualifying zip codes! https://victorygardeninitiative.org/blitz-registration/ We will be starting plants from seed but you can also purchase seedlings. Support your local greenhouses such as Webers Greenhouse powered by Teens Grow Greens or maybe Kellners Greenhouse Inc. We would love to hear about your favorite greenhouse too!
A big congratulations to Teens Grow Greens who received a $100,000 grant from Impact100 Greater Milwaukee. This generous amount will help their students and staff educate the community and customers of Webers Greenhouse where they learn to grow fresh produce year-round. Speaking of Teens Grow Greens... they'll be at our Capitol Drive store this Saturday from 9am-1pm selling herbs, succulents, starts and more. Stop over and support this fantastic program.
It’s time to transplant the rest of the seedlings: celery, melons, pumpkins, winter squash, tomato, eggplant, and peppers. #growfoodwithwic If you didn’t get the chance to start your plants from seed you can always purchase seedlings. Try to support local greenhouses like Webers Greenhouse powered by Teens Grow Greens and Kellner Greenhouse.
just placed my first order to pick up curbside!
When will your online shopping be available?
We always experiment with growing new veggies that work in school gardens. This season we discovered Mexican sour gherkin at Webers Greenhouse. Thank you Teens Grow Greens! This veggie made the cut✂️ The timing of planting and harvesting this tiny cuke is perfect for schools: • they’re prolific producers; • picking them feels like a treasure hunt; • their lemony flavor and crunch are a delight; • plus, they look like Barbie doll watermelons. Anyone else grow these? Tell us how you prepared them. We’re trying pickling right now. #FoodRight #TeensGrowGreens #WebersGreenHouse #babycukes #mexicansourgherkin
Thank you for the free growing kit. The lemon balm seeds are going to be amazing, and I can’t wait to reap all of the benefits. I was worried about what kind of seeds would be given away, and I felt like you knew I needed them. ❤️
Thank you to CBS 58 rockstar reporter, Brittany Lewis, for the great story about Rock the Green's #RockTheStream that aired today on CBS 58 Sunday Morning.
