STING LIKE A BEE

This video revisits the very first collaboration between Philip Miller and William Kentridge, and makes a wonderful point by referencing an Emily Dickinson poem:

Fame is a bee.
It has a song-
It has a sting-
Ah too, it has a wing.

Kentridge and Miller have used the updraft of fame in such a productive way, by bringing more awareness to the world. We're honored to be presenting these works to Milwaukee next Wednesday, Nov. 16th, 7:30 pm at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Please visit presentmusic.org/events for ticket information.

STOP MAKING SENSE

"I'm only an artist, my job is to make drawings, not to make sense." ~William Kentridge

The Kentridge Arts Festival is in full swing here in Milwaukee, with William Kentridge in town yesterday lecturing at the Milwaukee Art Museum, in support of Johannesburg’s experimental theatre troupe "Centre for the Less Good Idea", with 6 performances Nov. 8th-10th at the Broadway Theatre Center, sponsored by the Warehouse Art Museum and their current exhibit "William Kentridge: See For Yourself" (runs through Dec. 16th, FREE).

All of this is a prelude to Present Music’s Nov. 16th cine concert at MAM, featuring Kentridge animated films with the music of Philip Miller. Their decades-long collaborative process is highlighted in this video.

For more information on the concert and tickets, please visit presentmusic.org/events

Boo! Happy NOMI-WEEN from Present Music.

Klaus Nomi was a German countertenor New Wave performer who stunned NYC's East Village art scene in the 70's with covers of everything from Chubby Checkers to Henry Purcell. His career was cut short by the AIDS epidemic in 1983.

In the Nomi spirit, Present Music does a live cover of one of his original songs, "The Nomi Song", set to a retro-MTV-style mash-up from Fritz Lang's 1927 silent dystopian masterpiece "Metropolis"

From the creative team of Eric Segnitz. Marty Butorac and Ross Monagle, with the spooky, disembodied voice of Klaus Nomi singing:

"If they saw my face, could I still take a bow?
Will they know me? Know me? Nomi now."

The keynote will be a world premiere by Miller written to accompany the poetry of another important contributor to the artist’s prodigious body of work, his sister Eliza Kentridge."

Sky Hopinka

Present Music would like to send a big CONGRATULATIONS to Sky Hopinka, who was named a winner of a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, commonly known as a “genius grant.”

The foundation credits Hopinka, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, with “developing new forms of cinema that center the perspectives of Indigenous people."

Hopinka was a guest artist at our concert "Thanksgiving: Circle Unbroken" on November 21, 2021. Along with Raven Chacon winning the Pulitzer for our commission for "Voiceless Mass," that event was loaded with talent!

Combining imagery and language in films and videos that offer new strategies of representation for the expression of Indigenous worldviews.

Please join the song-spinning duo Rabbit Rabbit Radio for a very special intimate evening of music on October 5th. At the heart of this post-genre song band is singing violinist Carla Kihlstedt and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Matthias Bossi. Many of you know Carla from the recent Present Music world premiere of her song-cycle 26 Little Deaths, inspired by Edward Gorey's abcedarium, The Gashlycrumb Tinies.

Carla and Matthias are long-time musical collaborators. They have visited Milwaukee before, garnering a rabid following with their experimental art-rock band Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and with Kihlstedt's staged song cycle, Necessary Monsters. This time, they come as a duo, with their kids in tow, to serenade you at Tanner-Monagle, Inc. -- the iconic studio at which many of the Present Music albums have been recorded.

The music of Rabbit Rabbit Radio draws on their collective love of heart-wrenching balladry, art song, folk song, industrial music and improvised music. If you listen closely, you’ll hear traces of their many musical associations, but this project is their own personal challenge: a dare to peel back influence and to reveal a music that is stripped down and intimate, and all the more powerful for it. The songs of Rabbit Rabbit Radio are raw and beautiful, sparse and rich, lighthearted and full of pathos.

There are no advance ticket sales, but space is limited, first come, first serve. Please come when doors open at 6:30 to secure your seat! $30 General Admission/$10 Students & Kids under 16.

A “JACQUES” OF ALL TRADES?

A poet, playwright, novelist, designer, filmmaker, visual artist, and celebrities’ celebrity? No, not Andy Warhol, but maybe his French antecedent.

Jean Cocteau was not just a dilettante, dabbler and dandy who courted the Bohemian elite of Paris. He was also one of the most prolific masters of the 20th Century, whose expressions in a variety of mediums reflected a frantic personal manifesto: “to escape himself, by whatever means necessary. He invents. He transfigures. He mythifies. He creates. He fancies himself an artist.”

Cocteau knew almost nothing of filmmaking when he made La Belle et La Bete at age 57. And in the wake of WWll, resources for film were scarce in France, and he had to rely mostly upon an accumulated bag-of-tricks to create this film’s uncanny aura. Even the usual ‘happily-ever-after’ became chiaroscuro illusion for him. When the Beast finally reverts to a handsome prince, the Beauty’s ambivalent response is “I’ll have to get used this…”.

Present Music screens "La Belle et la Bête" with the chamber opera by Philip Glass at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Sept. 11th at 7:30 p.m.

In conjunction with Milwaukee Art Museum's exhibition, Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret*
