A “JACQUES” OF ALL TRADES?

A poet, playwright, novelist, designer, filmmaker, visual artist, and celebrities’ celebrity? No, not Andy Warhol, but maybe his French antecedent.

Jean Cocteau was not just a dilettante, dabbler and dandy who courted the Bohemian elite of Paris. He was also one of the most prolific masters of the 20th Century, whose expressions in a variety of mediums reflected a frantic personal manifesto: “to escape himself, by whatever means necessary. He invents. He transfigures. He mythifies. He creates. He fancies himself an artist.”

Cocteau knew almost nothing of filmmaking when he made La Belle et La Bete at age 57. And in the wake of WWll, resources for film were scarce in France, and he had to rely mostly upon an accumulated bag-of-tricks to create this film’s uncanny aura. Even the usual ‘happily-ever-after’ became chiaroscuro illusion for him. When the Beast finally reverts to a handsome prince, the Beauty’s ambivalent response is “I’ll have to get used this…”.

Present Music screens "La Belle et la Bête" with the chamber opera by Philip Glass at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Sept. 11th at 7:30 p.m.

In conjunction with Milwaukee Art Museum's exhibition, Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret*

A TALE AS OLD AS TIME

French author Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve’s original 1740 Beauty and the Beast was actually an update of the “animal groom story”, a fairytale trope of love’s transformational powers found in many cultures over thousands of years.

SO WHAT if your betrothed looks like Chewbacca from Milwookie?? He might be a real peach! You know the saying, one beastly suitor is worth a bushel of fair princes. Those guys are always a letdown compared to the furry thrill of the unknown.

BECOME ENCHANTED yourself on Sept. 11th at the Milwaukee Art Museum, as Present Music premieres a new version of Philip Glass’ chamber opera score, accompanying the classic 1946 film by Jean Cocteau.

With members of the The Philip Glass Ensemble.

PM will screen Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête alongside Philip Glass’ opera plus music by young French composer Christophe Chassol.

08/29/2022

French composer and audio-visual maverick Christophe CHASSOL demonstrates his method of "ultra-scoring", which takes visual and sound objects from "reality" and weaves them into a narrative connecting listeners to a more expansive, ecstatic panorama of "life".

Chassol comes from a jazz background (from his days at the Berklee College of Music in Boston), but has a wide, almost anthropological array of influences-- ranging from comics, horror movies and documentaries to artists like Maurice Ravel, Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal, and author Herman Hesse.

On Sept. 11th, as part of French Connection at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Present Music will premiere a new arrangement of excerpts from his magnum opus "Big Sun".

"When Philip Glass was a young student of Nadia Boulanger in Paris, he became enamoured of the films of Jean Cocteau. This production of La Belle et la Bete is the perfect meeting of two minds; the master minimalist and the master surrealist, half a century apart. It's a magical experience!" - Eric Segnitz, Co-Artistic Director

Members of the The Philip Glass Ensemble perform with Present Music, bringing this piece to life with full orchestration at the Milwaukee Art Museum, September 11th at 7:30 pm, as part of French Connection, in conjunction with MAM's exhibition, Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret.

05/29/2022

May 29th is the birthday of Ben Patterson, the nearly-forgotten Black founding-member of the early 60's Fluxus movement, along with such luminaries as John Cage and Yoko Ono.

Trained as a classical bassist but unable to find work in an American orchestra, Patterson began composing to "open people's thinking-- not with shock but with surprise, so they become more aware and sensitive to the world around them". This approach included the embrace of banal, ordinary sounds-- such as the humble medium of paper.

Here, the paper-trained musicians of Present Music let 'er rip with a pandemic version of his inimitable "Paper Piece":
