This week on Shop Talk Tuesday we're sharing four quick tips to help you keep things streamlined and simplified as you prepare for prom season in your shop.
1️⃣ Create a display of your offerings
Layout the key elements of your designs including band options, jewels, and garters. Make it easy for customers to see what elements will be used to create their order.
2️⃣ Use a quick & simple form
Capture all the key details for the order including the couples names and contact information. If you offer corsages and handheld bouquets, use a checkbox for customers to identify their preference. Be sure to include a space for details like dress / accessory details and flower preferences (or dislikes!).
3️⃣ Engage and recommend
Talk with customers as you review the form. Ask to see what they’re planning to wear or if they have any flower inso pics then use your expertise to offer them 3 recommendations that would pair nicely with the color they’ll be wearing. Be careful to limit recommendations to ~3 distinct choices so customers have the option to choose but keep it simple enough so they can quickly finalize their order. Don’t forget to take detailed notes on their order form.
4️⃣ Prep in the moment
Take a second after each order to snip a sample of the ribbon(s) directly to the order sheet before moving onto the next. If the order is for a wristlet, make the bow, attach it to the wristlet, then add it, any jewels, and the order form directly to the corsage box to save time when prepping your orders before the big day.

It is Three Stem Thursday time! Today's design features beautiful spring flowers and ribbon from kennicott.com. I started this design by placing 4 Oasis U-glu dots on the top of the vase equal distance apart. I then wrapped 2 pieces of ribbon up and made a bow at the top to create an armature of sorts. Its pretty cool how Kennicott Brothers is always looking towards the future of our great industry.... Let me tell you a little story. When learning of a new floral think-tank that had been formed, they quickly wished us well and asked if they could contribute in any meaningful way. To that end, a future Creative Cartel meeting will be held at one of their beautiful Kennicott Brothers locations, and this pic you see is of the group enjoying a meal and cocktail on Lenny Walker. I'm not sure if he will like the fact that I am posting this... but I have to say, while I have only been working with Kennicott for a little over a year, I am completely blown away by their commitment to the floral industry, their dedication to promoting flowers and florists, providing education for designers and supplying beautiful product at a fantastic price! Fun facts about Ranunculus, a delicate springtime flower with multi-layered petals. These beautiful bloomers stand on straight stems and have a long vase life – making them a favorite for many florists. With layers of ruffled petals in a rainbow of hues, these flowers add vibrancy, texture, and a splash of color to any design. A symbol of admiration and love, it’s also no wonder Ranunculus is such a popular wedding flower.

Anemone, also known as the Lily of the Field or Poppy Anemone, is native to Mediterranean Europe. They come in a variety of colors, including red, pink, purple, blue and white. Choose strong stems with flowers closed or just beginning to open, although be aware that flowers will close naturally when in cold and dark conditions. Inspect for bruising and yellowing leaves, these flowers are ethylene sensitive and have a shorter vase life 3-8 days. Beautiful in wedding work and everyday design. Be sure to NOT mix them with daffodils and know that they do better in a vase then in foam.

It's Shop Talk Tuesday Time!!
Let's talk about your salesperson and the importance of having a great relationship with them. For me it is all about trusting them to be my eyes. Because I am hours away from my wholesaler, I like to place my order and then tell them to add on 5-10 bunches of mid-priced seasonal flowers and folliages. I have discovered soooo many varieties that I may not have ever seen had it not been for my salesperson! Many blooms have a very short growing season and if, like me, you don't visit your wholesaler often you may miss them... like one of my favorite accent flowers ERIOSTEMON.... if not for my salesperson shopping for me I may not have discovered this beauty years ago!

Why, because it catches your attention! The same exact way that a HORIZONTAL design would catch someone's attention at a service. Shop Talk Tuesday!!! Just one week to go until the florist's Super Bowl!! There are things that can be done to make the day go easier and less stressful. We hit on several of them last month, but now that we are a week out let's get serious!
Make sure your coolers, buckets and tools are all cleaned and ready to go. As the flowers come in for processing, take off any plastic sleeves (except on tulips, leave them on and pull them up to force the tulips into being straight), but leave the cardboard sleeves on the roses. This helps protect them in an extremely crowded cooler. Be sure to separate your roses into stem length, so you aren't cutting 70cm roses down for low lush specials.
Start the "babysitting" process on slow to open blooms, like alstro, lilies, carns etc. We will keep these out of the cooler for a day or two until the lilies are just beginning to crack, and the other flowers look like they are going to open nicely, then back in our coolers they go!
Start greening! We do 99% vased arrangements at vday, and can start greening early because we use long lasting greens only. Our faves are Italian and Israeli ruscus, barker bush, salal tips, variegated pittosporum, myrtle and aspidistra leaves, but there are lots of great long-lasting greens to choose from. We will green up cases of vases and just pop the whole box back in the cooler.
Be sure that pricing boards are updated, and each special has a clear recipe posted at each design station. Each special also needs a quick but colorful description posted at each phone for your salespeople.
Assign each employee their duties, make sure they are put in a position to succeed. tasked with doing what they excell at. Discuss again phone etiquette. Upselling, add ons, and how to make the convo short and sweet! Vday is not a time for custom orders... make sure your phone people know how to promote the specials you have.

We also hope you know how much your support this past week means to this small event based business. Mother's Day was the light we needed to see as it shown bright that beauty, generosity, and camaraderie are alive + well even in the muddiness of such stress filled, uncertain times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We saw it at every turn from every direction- in our online store tech support going above and beyond to help us meet compliance requirements, our flower farmers making special trips to town to bring product; our Kennicott Milwaukee wholesaler letting us know more product arrived and putting together a last minute vessel order; Colectivo Coffee moving forward with hosting our yearly pop up and offering us a conference room so we wouldn't have to work out of a van (no way that one would have worked out well); a college friend offering to help find media attention and coaching us through; Brian Kramp and barthell generously encouraging and supporting a tv neophyte; more friends streaming the coverage from the East coast; a stranger calling to say the 9:15 segment was a good one; Clark Graphics Milw rush printing signage and care cards so we wouldn't have to go to a big chainstore printer; friends and family sharing posts, posting pictures of their flowers, and even inventing reasons to buy flowers for others; a spouse checking in every few hours to say, "you're doing great! You've got this!" and making sure food and sleep were happening; an employee offering a deeply discounted rate on labor (don't worry, we didn't let that one happen); customers calling, texting, and emailing to say how much they enjoyed their flowers; another floral company offering distanced assistance if we needed it; and finally, Milwaukeeans turning up to celebrate their Moms with our flowers and the flowers of all our floral friends.

We have so much gratitude that mere words couldn't possibly convey this feeling. So, said simply– Thank you.
