I just had the best conversation with an adorable second grade class in Loudoun County. 💛🐠🐙🐬They’ve been learning about the parts of a story that make up fairytales this week and their teacher asked me to read my favorite. I picked H. C. Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ -of course- because it is a great reminder that we cannot always have what we want.

This age is so fun because they have one foot in the whimsy of childhood and the other taking a step into reality. It makes for some amazing questions!

“Can you speak to sea creatures?”

“What beach can I find mermaids?”

“What ocean (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic...) do you live in?”

“Are mermaids real?”
