A couple of years ago, I began an incredible journey of learning the importance of African American foodways with Chef David and Chef Tonya Thomas at Ida B’s Table. Little did I know at the time that it would propel me into a Food and Beverage career (mainly beverage) that all begins with a story.
This trip will be the next chapter in that story. I have the opportunity to join some of the world’s leaders in African American foodways on a trip to Cameroon to taste and create with the food of our ancestors.
What it is: Roots to Glory Tours is partnering with Culinary Historian Michael Twitty to embark on another “food journey” to Cameroon in order to introduce African Atlantic Chefs to their ancestral culinary heritage. This nine-day experience, from March 3rd through the 15th, will focus on the food, culture, traditions and most importantly, the history of the Cameroonian “plate.” This will be a chance for all those who love cooking to connect with their passion in a new light. There will be opportunities included in the itinerary to learn from the best chefs in Cameroon. We will be visiting Douala, Buea, and Kribi to learn all about their foodways.
The Ask: I am asking for assistance in getting to Africa. The total cost is $3900. This includes housing, meals, and flights. I raised some funds from my trip a few years ago (teaching in Barcelona for three months) right before the world shut down and will be using the $900 to pay for the initial deposit. My goal is to raise the additional $3000.
