From our very own Dr. Paul George:

"You should have been in the Miami of the early 1960s when Cassius Clay burst onto the scene. Lyrical, brash, entertaining and ultra athletic, he thrilled a bunch of us young guys who still saw ourselves as athletes. Fight after fight he always came out on top. Pre-fight chatter was often accompanied by a Clay poem. Post fight victories usually found him preening over his good looks and unmarked face. Then he shocked us by knocking out the aged, ex-champ Archie Moore bringing on a title fight with the fearsome Sonny Liston. That unexpected victory in February 1964 on MB was a transformational event for sports and, as it turned out, for America and elsewhere for several reasons.

You won't believe what the 24 hour run up to the Liston fight was like. I got the story from the wonderful Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, who was as close to Ali as anyone. R. I. P. , Champ!"

May is #HaitianHeritageMonth, an opportunity to celebrate Haitian heritage and culture. South Florida is home to one of the largest populations of Haitians outside of Haiti. Metal sculptor Almann Ulysse here displays one of his works in this photo by André Chung taken in 2005 as part of a project to document the expressive traditions of Haitians living in South Florida, a collaboration of HistoryMiami Museum and IRIS PhotoCollective. The art of making fè koupé (metal sculptures from flattened oil barrels) developed among blacksmiths in Haiti during the 1950s. #historymiami #folklife #archivesofinstagram #museumsofinstagram #librariesofinstagram
