☁️ MEMPHIS DRONE TIP ☁️

Did you know cloud ceilings can affect whether you can legally fly your drone?

FAA rules require drone pilots to remain at least 500 feet below clouds and 2,000 feet horizontally from clouds.

In this example, the cloud ceiling is reported at 397 feet AGL (Above Ground Level). Because the clouds are so low, drone operations may not be legal or safe.

Always check both the weather and airspace before every flight.

A safe flight starts before the drone ever leaves the ground.

New BCOW training aids are officially built and ready for flight operations. 🚁

These gates will be used to help students develop:
• Controlled flight
• Precision maneuvering
• Spatial awareness
• Confidence under movement
• Advanced drone handling skills

As Bluff City Overwatch continues to grow, so will our training progression. These gates will eventually help introduce students to more advanced operational flying concepts, obstacle navigation, and future BCOW200 skill-building courses.

As we gather in remembrance this Memorial Day weekend, please continue to operate your drones safely and responsibly.

Recreational drone pilots should avoid flying directly over crowds or groups of people during holiday events and gatherings. Stay within Federal Aviation Administration guidelines.

Also be mindful of airport operations and airspace restrictions.

Having control over your drone and understanding the controls is paramount to safe and legal drone operations.

Most people dont know this, but you must have a recreational certification from the Federal Aviation Administration in order to fly a drone, even in your own backyard and regardless of age. Once you go outside with your drone you are considered to be in federal airspace.

In dreary days like today we can see low cloud coverage.

Always fly 500 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontally from any clouds.

You can use the Aloft Air Control App under the weather section to check cloud cover. Right now where I am in Class G airspace the cloud coverage is at 880 feet.

So let's do a little math, clouds at 880 feet, drone must be 500 feet below clouds; max flight is at 380 feet AGL (Above Ground Level).

Super Bowl LXIV is coming to Nashville in 2030.

As a drone operator you need to know that the Federal Aviation Administration will issue TFR's, Temporary Flight Restrictions, for that event.

The FIFA World Cup will also see TFRs put in place during their events.

As a drone operator it is your responsibility to check the air space to ensure safe and legal flight operations.

We teach about this in our Intro to Drone Operations Course.

🌙 Flying at night comes with additional FAA requirements.

Drone operations conducted at night require anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles to help improve aircraft visibility and airspace safety.

Understanding night operations, airspace awareness, FAA regulations, and safe flight practices is exactly what we teach in Bluff City Overwatch’s Intro to Drone Operations course.
