“If Black Women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all of the systems of oppression.” - COMBAHEE RIVER COLLECTIVE Statement 1977
As a non-Black woman of color in the USA, I have benefitted in many ways from the same systems that oppress Black Americans. I commit myself to fighting anti-blackness and advancing anti-racist practices within my spheres of influence- in the white spaces I’ve been privileged to move through because of where I grew up and went to school, within the South Asian community, and within the ethical fashion community where I have been working as an advocate for labor rights. I take guidance from the many resources made available to us by, and the intelligence of, Black leaders and particularly Black Women.
I had planned to close shop at the end of May, but due to the pandemic and rescheduling of weddings, I will reopen soon for another year or so, once I feel I can safely conduct fittings, which is still not the case at my studio or given my personal health issues. So TWS is just me now, @nnayantaraa — the actions I take and statements I make are deeply personal. I am donating, signing, calling, tweeting, and having difficult conversations with friends and family. So I share this not for your approval or applause, but to take accountability on this platform I’ve created, even though I haven’t been active on it for some time. I am much more active on my personal account and you can join me there if you want more than before and after pics from me.
As I had been planning to depart the wedding industry and dig deeper into my work fighting for economic and social justice in the garment industry, particularly with a focus on the labor, often performed by women of color, I struggled with what I should do or say now from this wedding-related page. The wedding industry has never felt like home to me, so I hesitate to state that I will be taking actions to address racist and anti-black practices within this industry I do not particularly care to be a part of and am in the process of leaving.
