A fact that not many people know is that on our wedding day, my wife and I were homeless. 3 people who were at the wedding actually knew that. We lived out of a Honda and Acura and slept in a very old tiny RV with no real utilities hooked up on foreclosed property, in the mountains, 15 miles away from the closest town with a dog. Many people in our society would have ended the relationship/engagement or stay together but resent each other and blame try other for the circumstances causing the homelessness.

We weren't homeless because of addictions or criminal activity. We both had jobs and had income just not enough to stay where we were or enough to move somewhere. We both chose to continue our relationship together even if we didn't have a home.

The thing that got us thru it all was the fact that we chose to not tear each other down and make the other feel insignificant or unloved. Too many times in difficulty and struggle couples will resort destructive behavior towards their significant other that destroys relationships all because it easy to just blame the other or it will make ourselves feel better.

A relationship is the coexistence of 2 people to create a greater 1. Destructive behavior works to subtract and separate. To become greater we must choose to be better. We chose to focus on building each other back up. We chose to focus on our strengths and work on our weaknesses. We came together to focus on our goal of getting married and we did!!!!

It wasn't easy. You can only eat Cobb salad at Denny's or shower at planet fitness so many times before you never want to see either.

So if your having struggles and problems, it's gonna be okay. You just have to make the choice to build each other and the relationship up!!!!

Also we ended up moving in to a apartment with friends the day after our wedding!!!!

Being in a happy, healthy committed relationship is one of the greatest things to have in our lives. It's also something that takes A LOT work to build and maintain and even more to grow and flourish. Marriage takes more work because you vowed to your spouse that you are committed to them for life. Every relationship must have a solid foundation for it to be happy and healthy for a lifetime. My wife and I have been privileged to have dear friends who recommended this book "Love & Respect" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. For our marriage we used the principles taught in this book to firmly solidify the foundation of our marriage. Whether your relationship is the best it can be or if you're going through a rough time, first never give up hope and second take the time to try reading and applying principles taught in any relationship book and give it time. I recommend this book because for us, it was the most impactful in our marriage. For some of you ladies you may be thinking, "He has to earn my respect. I'm not just going to give him respect" and men I know we think we love our women but if you ask them, we'd be wrong. That's ok because we have the right to feel the way we feel. However if you desire to be a better spouse and grow your relationship, put your feelings aside and give the book a try and apply the principles. What do you think about Love & Respect?
