This week we're featuring Red Velvet Cake and Red Soda in honor of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated as an important part of American history and a celebration of freedom, resilience, family, and community.
Why the color red?
Red foods and drinks have long been associated with Juneteenth celebrations. Historians trace the tradition to West African cultures, where red symbolizes strength, sacrifice, resilience, perseverance, and joy. That's why you'll often find red beverages, red cakes, strawberries, watermelon, and other red foods served during Juneteenth gatherings.
🍰 Red Velvet Cake
While red velvet cake was not originally created as a Juneteenth dessert, its vibrant red color connects beautifully with the tradition of serving red foods and beverages during Juneteenth celebrations. That's why we're featuring our scratch-made Red Velvet Cake this week in honor of the holiday.
🥤 Red Soda
A traditional Juneteenth favorite that pays tribute to the long-standing custom of serving red beverages during celebrations of freedom.
🍪 Southern Tea Cakes
A Southern classic passed down through generations. Tea cakes have long been a staple at family reunions, church gatherings, and community celebrations throughout the South, making them a fitting addition to our Juneteenth offerings.
