Please locate your septic system before you run water or electrical lines. Luckily we didn’t hit this line and bust it. You never know what someone else has buried under the ground so keep that in mind when you buy a home with an existing septic system. This one had not been cleaned out since the 1980’s. There was a really thick amount of sludge on top but We got them took care of. Don’t put bleach or big amounts of antibacterial soap and other products that will kill the bacteria in your tank. You need a certain amount of bacteria inside your tank which will keep it from building solids on top of the water. If you want to know if the bacteria in your tank is working properly, pull the lid. When you look inside you should see a green water. If you see a crust on top then that means your bacteria is not good. Some simple fixes to get good bacteria back in it can be as simple as pouring ruined milk or ice cream down the drain or pickingupnsome bakers yeast that you can pick up at the gricery store. Some Septic tips for the week!

1. Before buying a home with an existing septic system, be sure to get an inspection of the tank. You never know what is going on under ground. This has been a week for roots in tanks. Don’t plant trees such as Maples close to your system. You could end up having trouble years down the road.

2. If your tank is pretty deep in the ground, it would help if you get a riser put on it. This could save you from having to dig it up time and time again. You should have it pumped every 5 to 7 years so you don’t want to have to keep digging it every time.
