e immersed in it to understand how it breathes. The thing that me makes me tick. Barefoot in the grass. My son when he is sleeping and when he is in full destruction mode. Craft paper and lace. Bright colorful rooms with big comfy chairs. Junk in wheat fields. Parts of small towns where no one understands its beauty. A smile. A kiss. Big earrings. The love of my life. Watching other people marry theirs.

Pro trip: check what time sunset is on the day of your wedding and add that to your timeline.

You really don’t need more than 10-15 minutes of time to capture some truly beautiful sunset photos.

You can sneak out during golden hour for that glorious warm light, right at sunset when the colors are going to be the richest, or right after the sun has set and you can get that beautiful transition to blue hour.

I like to keep my eyes on what’s happening (is the couple still eating dinner? are there formalities about to start? would skipping out for pictures interrupt the flow if the evening?) and what’s happening in the sky (is it too cloudy for sunset? are we likely to get good colors? what’s the position of the sun in relationship to an easy to access spot for photos?) and then attempt to time our skip away as sneakily as possible.

As much as I love a great sunset I never want taking extra photos to interrupt your flow of the day.

Joanna and Erik made the trek to KC this fall for some wedding day scouting and to sneak in their engagement session while we had beautiful fall colors.

Seeing all of this gorgeous color on the trees is making me so excited for spring to finally make its appearance.

I can never decide if I love the spring blossoms or the fall colors more.

As someone obsessed with all things vintage, it probably comes as a surprise to no one that I would return to shooting film.

After picking up a manual 35 mm Nikkormat at an estate sale last year I began working through a large box of film rolls that my mom had sent me after my black and white film class in college.

I started bringing the camera with me on family trips. I was slow with a meter and not even positive the camera worked. More than once I got back only a few images from a full roll of 24.

Slowly I started feeling more confident. The camera started to make more appearances. I realized that the absence of the LCD screen meant my brain didn’t slide into work mode. I couldn’t overshoot. I could only see what was in front of me, anticipate the perfect moment to click the shutter, and then let it go.

As someone who has honed my craft on perfection and constantly correcting, taking time to deliberately work with film has been a lesson in accepting whatever comes back and finding beauty in the imperfections.

I knew this styled shoot would be the perfect opportunity to play a bit more and (although very different from my digital editing) I might be a little bit obsessed.

Can we talk for just a moment about the classic wedding portrait?

If you’ve been following around here for a bit, you know that I love a documentary moment and figuring out the most beautiful way to tell the story of the wedding day is pretty much what I live for.

But intentionally planning for a beautiful portrait on your wedding day is also high on that priority list. We don’t need hours on hours on for posed portraits. Scheduling even 10 to 15 minutes for just the two of you will absolutely do the job.

Trends come and go, but a classic wedding portrait lasts forever. It’s more than just a photo—it’s a timeless reminder of your love and who you are in this moment in time, meant to be cherished for generations.

So regardless of what kind of a wedding you were planning, please do yourself a favor and take just a couple of moments to smile at your photographer (and then you can go back to partying and ignoring us again 🤣).

It’s always a sweet gift to photograph a couple in love. It’s a little sweeter when one of those people is a friend.

I’ve know Malorie for over 10 years. In those years I’ve watched her crush her goals as she pursued her education and career. I can’t count how many times she’s walked into a room and immediately lit it up with her joy and laughter.

When she called and told me she was engaged, I knew she must have found someone special.

Congratulations Malorie and Brandon and I can’t wait to celebrate with you this summer.

Dave and Joyce lived around the corner from one another for years and years. Somehow their paths just didn’t cross until a friend had a through and made sure she invited them both to dinner one night.

Also Dave is my dad (and it’s weird to type his name in a caption like that). I truly loved getting to travel to Idaho to not just be there for his big day but to get to share my love through photographing their celebration.

Film or Digital?

Can you spot the difference?

I had so much fun with Page and Jesse exploring not just a new location but playing around with some 35 mm film as well. It’s something I’ve been playing around with on my own but this was the first time in a very long time I’ve used it during a “real” session. I might have to make it a more regular habit.

Today marks 4 years of getting to be a part of my favorite event of the year! Sharing a few favorites from past years.

Thundergong kicks off tonight with an amazing crew, all in support of and their mission to help provide prosthetic limbs for amputees without insurance coverage. So far Steps of Faith has helped over 1200 individuals receive the care they need and tonight we have a chance to help them raise money to continue their mission and benefit event more.
