Often bright yellow, banana slugs can resemble their namesake fruit in various stages of ripeness or decay, shading from white to greenish browns and almost black. The Pacific banana slug (A. columbianus), which is sometimes spotty, is the most widespread, and is found outside California.

Everyone here knows I’m a sucker for a tourist trap, and Olympic National Park did not disappoint. Along our travels, we came across a few gargantuan trees in an area known as the “Valley of the Giants.”

Within the Quinault Rainforest, you’ll find six champion conifers, including the following:

World’s Largest Sitka Spruce: Located off the North Shore Road near the Lake Quinault Resort, this tree is 174 feet tall and estimated to be well over 1,000 years old.

World’s Largest Western Hemlock: Easily reached via the 1200 Foot Trail starting near the Rain Forest Resort Village on South Shore Road.

The Big Cedar: A massive western red cedar located near the Kestner Homestead, part of the Quinault Rain Forest Nature Trail.

Standing at 12,281 feet, Mount Adams is Washington’s second highest peak and has 12 named glaciers. There’s so many fun facts about this stratovolcano I could spout out, but I’ll leave you with this: In 1853, cartographer Hall J. Kelly (who was scheming to rename all of the peaks in the Cascades after presidents) meant to name Mount Hood after President Adams; however, placed the marker 40 miles north, not even knowing a mountain was there. The name just stuck because the mountain hadn’t otherwise been named.
