Saturday is 8/8 — Lion’s Gate, one of those dates that has become enormously popular in the spiritual community.
You’ll hear that a cosmic “portal” opens, that Sirius aligns with Earth and Orion, and that powerful energies arrive for manifestation, abundance and awakening.
I love the symbolism — but as an astrologer, I also like separating symbolism from astronomy.
There really is an ancient and fascinating connection to Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky. The ancient Egyptians closely observed its annual reappearance and associated it with their New Year and the life-giving flooding of the Nile — making Sirius a beautiful symbol of renewal, fertility and abundance.
What they did not celebrate was an August 8 “Lion’s Gate Portal.” The 8/8 portal is a much more modern spiritual tradition, combining Sirius, the Sun traveling through Leo and the numerological symbolism of the number 8.
Does that make Lion’s Gate meaningless? ...Not to me!
Leo is the sign of the heart, courage, creativity, joy and the willingness to shine. And I think there is something wonderful about taking 8/8 to stop and ask:
✨What does my heart want?
✨Where am I ready to be braver?
✨What am I ready to create or bring into my life?
Maybe the “portal” isn’t something that suddenly opens somewhere in the heavens......
Maybe we are the ones opening. 🦁✨
For now, enjoy your Lion’s Gate. Set an intention. Listen to your heart. And remember that symbolism can be meaningful without having to be astronomy. 🤩
