Here in Indiana as we wait for the dahlias to grow and bloom I took a moment to walk around and admire some of the other beautiful things happening in the garden. This year I tried a couple of new alliums, I’m hooked! Who knew they came in such beautiful colors!

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a big alcohol drinker—but lately I’ve been enjoying a few delicious cocktails! There’s just something extra special about using ingredients straight from your own garden—it really elevates the whole experience. 🌿
What could be more perfect than apple mint for a Mint Julep? It’s the featured drink at tonight’s Kentucky Derby party… or honestly, just the perfect treat after a long day in the garden!

Here’s a simple (and seriously yummy) recipe—the secret is steeping the mint in the syrup:

Apple Mint Simple Syrup (makes about 8 cocktails)
Bring 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar just to a near boil over medium heat.
Add 30–40 apple mint leaves. Remove from heat and let steep for about an hour, or until it cools to room temperature.
Strain out the leaves and refrigerate for a few hours (or up to several days).

Apple Mint Julep
Muddle a few fresh mint leaves in the bottom of a glass with 1 oz apple mint simple syrup.
Fill the glass with crushed ice.
Add 2 ounces of bourbon.
Stir until the ice is slightly melted—this makes it smoother and less strong (my personal preference!).

A little garden tip:
Apple mint is a perennial in our area (Zone 6a) and thrives in a sunny spot where it has room to spread—because it will spread quickly! It also makes a beautiful filler for arrangements. Just be sure to cut it early in the morning before the sun hits it, then give it about 24 hours to fully hydrate. For best results, hydrate in a cool, dark space (ideally 50–60°F).

This Saturday, come out and hang out with us and chat, learn about all things dahlias For all skill levels, let’s learn from each other. Feel free to bring extra tubers to trade, sell or give away! We will have coffee, water, cookies and muffins, feel free to add to the snack table if you wish. One of our attendees is also bringing wooden stakes that are perfect for dahlias- free!

Wow—what an incredible tuber sales season! 🌸
We are so grateful for each and every one of you who ordered, shared, and supported our farm this winter & spring. Your enthusiasm for dahlias truly makes all the hard work worthwhile.

At this point, all orders should have received a tracking number, with the exception of the last few placed today—those will be heading out tomorrow. Online orders for 2026 are now officially closed.
If you are local, we’ll have a small selection of tubers available on April 18th at the Dahlia Gathering, along with a free growing class. We’d love to see you there!

Today marks a shift here on the farm—from shipping to potting up dahlia tubers. One of my favorite tools today was a simple metal feed scoop (you can find them at most farm stores). It’s perfect for filling 6-inch pots quickly and efficiently!

These potted tubers will grow on in our unheated greenhouse until mid-May, when it’s finally safe to plant them out in our zone.
