What’s the significance of this ‘Water Meter’ design?

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans’ iconic water meter covers became powerful symbols of the city’s resilience and cultural pride. These cast-iron covers, featuring the distinctive “Crescent Box” design with a crescent moon and stars, were originally designed in the early 20th century by the Ford Meter Box Company. Following the catastrophic flooding caused by the levee failures, much of New Orleans’ infrastructure was severely damaged. However, the water meter covers endured and remained visible reminders of the city’s enduring spirit.

In the post-Katrina era, the water meter cover has been embraced as a symbol of New Orleans’ recovery and identity. It represents the strength of local heritage, the importance of infrastructure renewal, and the deep connection between the city and its unique culture. The design appears on various items like jewelry, art, and souvenirs, turning a utilitarian object into a cherished emblem of survival and unity.
