Houston Artist Michael Crowder. Michael Crowder is a mixed media sculptor who exhibits across the US and internationally. Originally from New Orleans, he is currently based in Houston, Texas. His sculpture often incorporates museum “art/ifacts” made of glass particles fused together in a variation of the historical pâte de verre technique.
He has been honored with nomination for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award and multiple Artist-in-Residence Fellowships at the Dora Maar House in Ménerbes, France. Recently he was one of only two Americans invited to participate in an international sculpture park project involving 30 artists from 15 countries held in Bodh Gaya, India.
Museum collections include the Museum of American Glass, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Gandhi Maidan Museum, Patna, India.

I truly enjoy creating portraits. This particular one was very special to me. @richard.serra work was introduced to me in #artschool My mind was blown. Experiencing his work in @cityoffortworth and in @cityofnewyork changed my perception permanently. His monumental #coreten #steel sculptures reminding me of my place in the universe. These portraits are from his time in Houston at @menilcollection who presented his #drawing #exhibition. We spent 45 minutes together making images. He noticed the #rilke quote in my arm. Ask me to recite it to him. He then share his journal with me with sketched and notes which reflected the idea in the Rilke text. It was a magical experience to meet one of my hero’s.

This past Monday, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, in conjunction with The Levant Foundation, and UNICEF came together to celebrate Selven Jarmon’s “Leisure Tower I” exhibit at Texas Southern University’s University Museum.
In April 2019, refugee and immigrant children and youth from IM and PAIR - Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees along with volunteers, came together to build the art installation. The rocking chairs with intricate glass beading illustrate respite for those escaping wars, persecution and instability and were created to generate dialogue in the community about refugee resettlement and immigration.
The reception was commemorated by the participants of the project, refugee children and youth, volunteers and members of the local community. Stay tuned for future events centered around the exhibit!
