The scent of magnolia always brings me memories of my grandmother Nathalie, who cut them from their giant spreading magnolia tree every Spring and put them in a bowl so the house was suffused with the scent. I was fascinated by the red tipped “matchsticks” that fell from the blossom as it opened, the red seeds held by the seed pod later in the season, and the furry bud cover that fell off when the bloom was about to begin. Playing under that giant tree with its gnarly roots and carpet of moss was a magical playground for me. I gardened beside her and my mother Peggy who designed and made the most glorious mini rock garden landscapes. And I learned about wildflowers, turtles and identifying birds by their songs from “Big Peggy” my other grandmother along the Tennessee river. I am so grateful to all of my “mothers” for instilling a sense of wonder and a delight and reverence for nature which sustains me to this day. Passing that along to my own grandchildren is a joy. Happy Mothers Day.
