Caregivers Deserve Grief Support Too
You don’t have to wait until someone dies to grieve.

Grief often begins long before the final goodbye—when a parent’s memory fades, when roles reverse, when you lose time, energy, and a piece of your own identity in the care of someone else.

As a caregiver, your grief is valid. Your burnout is real. And your healing matters.

If no one has told you lately:
🧡 You’re doing enough.
🧡 You deserve rest.
🧡 You’re allowed to grieve what’s been lost—even while your loved one is still here.

I have created this space because I believe caregivers deserve as much support as the people they care for. You don’t have to carry this alone.

What is a Death Doula, Really?
(And Why You Might Want One)

Death doulas aren’t just for people who are dying. We’re here for the living, too.

As a certified death doula and former hospice nurse, I work with families to bring peace, clarity, and planning to one of life’s most difficult transitions. Some people think of doulas only in terms of birth—but death deserves the same presence, care, and preparation.

What does a death doula do?

Help individuals prepare emotionally, spiritually, and practically for the end of life

Support families in making care decisions, honoring rituals, and navigating grief

Advocate for a peaceful, personalized experience based on your values—not just the system’s

If you’re curious or unsure if this kind of support is right for you or your loved one, let’s talk about it.

💬 Have you ever heard of a death doula before? What questions do you have?

5 Signs It’s Time to Step in and Help Aging Parents

One of the hardest moments in life is realizing that your aging parents might need more help than they’re letting on. It can be tough to step into a caregiving role, but recognizing the signs early can make a world of difference for their safety and quality of life. Here are 5 key signs to watch for:

Decline in Personal Hygiene
Noticeable changes, like unwashed clothing, body odor, or neglected grooming, may indicate they’re struggling with daily tasks.

Difficulty Managing Finances
Missed bill payments, unopened mail, or unusual spending can signal they need help managing money or understanding their responsibilities.

Frequent Falls or Injuries
If they’ve had falls or unexplained bruises, it might be time to evaluate their home for safety and consider assistive devices or additional care.

Forgetfulness or Confusion
Memory lapses that go beyond normal aging—like forgetting to take medications or getting lost in familiar places—can indicate a deeper issue.

Changes in Mood or Behavior
Increased irritability, withdrawal from social activities, or signs of depression could mean they’re overwhelmed or feeling isolated.

If you’re noticing any of these signs, it’s time to take action—but where do you start?

In my book, Family Caregiving 101, I guide you step by step through assessing your parents’ needs, setting up care, and navigating tough conversations about their future. It’s packed with practical tools and advice to help you feel confident in taking the next steps.

The Role of a Death Doula: What We Do and Why It Matters

The term "death doula" might be unfamiliar to some, but our work is as ancient as it is deeply meaningful. As a Certified Death Doula, I help individuals and families navigate the end-of-life journey with compassion, support, and practical guidance.

So, what does a death doula do? Here’s a glimpse into this essential role:

Providing Emotional Support
Facing the end of life is profoundly personal and often overwhelming. I’m here to listen without judgment, provide comfort, and hold space for any emotions—fear, sadness, even joy—that arise during this time.

Facilitating Meaningful Conversations
Many families find it hard to discuss topics like final wishes, legacy, or unresolved relationships. I help open the door to these conversations, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and wishes are respected.

Offering Practical Guidance
From advance directives to funeral planning, I assist with the logistical aspects of end-of-life preparation, easing the burden on loved ones during an already emotional time.

Creating Moments of Peace
Whether it’s through meditation, music, or simply sitting in silence, I help create a calm and sacred environment for individuals and their families to reflect, connect, or just be together.

Supporting Grief and Transition
My role doesn’t end at the moment of passing. I provide ongoing support to families as they navigate their grief, offering resources, education, and a compassionate presence.

Death doulas aren’t here to replace medical professionals or spiritual leaders—we work alongside them to provide holistic care tailored to each family’s unique needs. At its heart, this work is about honoring life and helping people approach its end with dignity and love.

Have you heard of a death doula before? Or have you been a part of an end-of-life experience that could’ve used this kind of support? I’d love to hear your thoughts. 💛

🌅 I’m Not Just Talking About Death—I’m Changing the Way We Prepare for It.

Hi Facebook 👋 I’m Ebony, founder of My Sunset Doula—a practice that blends 20+ years of experience in hospice, caregiving, and end-of-life planning to bring comfort, clarity, and compassion to families navigating aging and dying.

I speak on topics that most people avoid—until they can’t. Things like:

How to prepare your family for end-of-life care

What we get wrong about aging and death in America

The transformational energy of grief

The privilege of planning for peace, not panic

If you're looking for a speaker who brings real-world experience, tough truths, and gentle guidance to a conversation we all need to have—I’m here for it.

Let’s connect. And if you host events, trainings, or conferences around aging, caregiving, healthcare, or end-of-life topics, I’d love to talk.

I am rereading "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying", by Sogyal Rinpoche. It's a fascinating, spiritual well of truth. I will be posting some of the gems I find this time through. If you are curious about Tibetan Buddhist teachings, reincarnation, or what not being afraid of death looks like, you should read this book.

When we start to accept and really understand that grief is energy, a broader definition emerges.

A less intense form of the same kind of grief is the way we grieve celebrities, the famous and the infamous, the stars among us.

These videos are not meant to judge. They are meant to tap into the healing power of collective grieving. Something magical happens when we grieve together. It lightens the load for all of us.
