Embalming Prayer

A hush falls over the room.
I am alone with her at last.
Of her life I have no idea.
I am her last link to the past.

What happened baby girl,
To bring you here to me?
You should be full of life,
Instead of having it end at three.

I swear to you pretty girl,
I will use all of my power,
To ease your mommy's pain,
In this, her most hurtful hour.

Tenderly I will clothe you,
In your favorite frilly dress.
Your hair I will brush softly.
Your porcelain skin, I will caress.

It is my job to prepare you,
For your final destination.
For although your life was short,
You are God's perfect creation.

I never knew you sweet one,
But on your face I plant a kiss.
Each soul who passes through here,
My heart will deeply miss.
