Join us on July 8 to read the Declaration of Independence at the Gazebo on the Green in Higganum. Celebration starts at 5 pm and reading is at 6 pm.

July 8, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was first read publicly to the citizens of the United States. It was read simultaneously at three locations-Philadelphia, Easton, PA, and Trenton, NJ.

May 25 to July 4, 2026
The Haddam 250 Committee is pleased to announce the “Celebrate Freedom” decoration contest for all Haddam residents and businesses. Decorate your home, apartments, outbuildings, or storefronts in red, white, and blue to celebrate America’s 250th. This is an opportunity to honor American history, show community spirit and create lasting memories.
Participants will be evaluated on their creativity, visual impact, and overall patriotic theme. The contest runs from May 25 to July 4, 2026. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Town-wide Picnic on July 11. To enter fill out the Google form and submit a photograph of your entry. Questions please email: [email protected]

Haddam Historical Society Program April 16, 2026 at 7 pm Haddam Fire Station #1, 439 Saybrook Road, Higganum, CT Free for HHS members, $5 for non-members

Local historian and former teacher, Phil Devlin will present a fascinating talk on the area's contribution to the War for Independence and highlight those who sacrificed their livelihoods, families and lives in the name of Freedom. 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the issuance of the Declaration of Independence. In honor of that historic event, communities across the New England and elsewhere are recalling their participation in the American Revolution. This presentation will focus on interesting stories of the towns in Middlesex County during the Revolutionary period with an emphasis on Haddam, Killingworth, and Middletown.
