The decline in the number of freighters on the Great Lakes marks a significant shift from the mid-20th century, reflecting broader changes in the maritime industry and regional economics. Once, the Great Lakes boasted a large fleet of freighters like the Manistee, which played a crucial role in transporting goods across the region. In 2022, the Manistee was sent to the scrapyard, symbolizing the end of an era for these iconic vessels.

The Tetons proved to be a challenging subject to photograph due to the thick clouds and inclement weather. However, with some fortunate breaks in the cloud cover and being in the perfect location at just the right moment, I managed to capture a handful of images that truly capture the stunning beauty of the Grand Tetons.

In February 2007, we departed from Las Vegas and began our journey north towards Ely on US 93. Little did we know, this was just the beginning of an extraordinary photographic escapade that we would share with both old and new friends.

As the day started to fade into night, I firmly believed in the mantra - if you spot something worth capturing, don't hesitate to stop. That's exactly what happened as I was about to suggest a break by the roadside when my friend instinctively slowed down and pulled over. It seemed like we both had the same photographic intuition.

During this trip, I found myself doing something out of the ordinary - using untested equipment. Just two weeks prior, I had to send my trusty Canon 70-200 f2.8 for repairs, leaving me without a crucial piece of my gear. A quick call to Canon and a few days later, I had a 70-200 f2.8 IS in my hands. It wasn't until this particular shot that I encountered a flaw in the IS version - flare. It became a challenge that I would grapple with over the next 7 days.

During the 30 minutes surrounding the moment I captured this photo, the atmosphere was incredibly surreal. Liam and I were engrossed in a discussion about camera settings and composition when the piercing cries of an elk echoed from across the river, followed by the haunting sounds of a pack of wolves as they hunted the animal. The ordeal seemed to end swiftly, sparing the elk from prolonged suffering.

We swiftly packed up and continued our journey northward on US 89. As we rounded a bend, we encountered a significant traffic jam heading south, led by a park ranger moving at a slow pace with flashing lights. Initially fearing a lengthy delay, my concerns were quickly replaced by awe as I discovered the reason for the congestion - a magnificent wolf gracefully trotting down the road. This unexpected sight was undoubtedly the highlight of our entire trip.

The whole experience was both exhilarating and humbling, a reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature. It was a moment that I will never forget, and one that solidified my love for the outdoors and wildlife. It was a reminder to always be prepared for the unexpected, and to appreciate the moments that take your breath away. I feel grateful to have witnessed such an awe-inspiring sight, and it's moments like these that make all the challenges of traveling and exploring the world worth it.

It’s funny how children can shift your focus. One day you’re shooting at 3am in the middle of the desert. Then fast forward a few years and you’re in ice rinks photographing your kid playing hockey.
