In United States history there are two battles, fought on American soil, that are remembered and visited often. The most famous is Gettysburg, fought in 1863, however the year before the town of Sharpsburg in Maryland was the site of one of the most important battles of the war. It is called Sharpsburg in the South and in the north it is remembered as Antietam, named after the creek that flows through the battlefield. It is remembered as America’s bloodiest day and it was the first time the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee had journeyed into the North. We will show you how the battle unfolded and tell stories that bring it to life. The aftermath was 22,000 men from both armies were dead, wounded or missing after this bloody day.
Rob Rowen, a local Civil War historian will give the talk with the diorama of the battlefield that is 12 feet x 6 feet. You will get a sense of this battle and it will entice you to make it a place you will visit when you are near Washington DC.
