A remarkable man passed away a few weeks ago. Tom was a brilliant, eclectic, humble, and generous man, a great lover of life. I got to know him through those who loved him, as well as in the process of creating a ceremony that honored his life and legacy.

His memorial service was in his home, where his beloved wife gathered with a close group of family and friends, a small group with deep connections to Tom. There was music (Tom Waits!), laughter, photos, sharing memories, tears, hugs, the tenderness that comes with grief, the gratitude that comes with the connection of abiding love. The day ended with a meal that included eggplant parm, one of the meals Tom loved to prepare for his beloveds.

A memorial or celebration of life can be as simple as this - a living room gathering with small group of people, a simple heartfelt ceremony, the participation in the circle of life.

‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.

A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be,
And oh, to lose.

A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing
to love.

When we create spaces for people to talk openly about death, dying, and grief, we know these conversations can be powerful—but also challenging.

What do you personally find most difficult when having conversations about death?

Is it:
• People’s fear or avoidance of the topic?
• Managing strong emotions in the room?
• Cultural or family differences around death?
• Your own feelings that come up during the conversation?
• Something else entirely?
