We had a blast with showmanship this year. A huge thank you goes out to all of our volunteer judges.
Poultry Showmanship is a bit different from other livestock since you can’t quite walk a chicken around a ring on a leash so the majority of the score is a test of knowledge. We have 4 classes divided by age and then a novice class for youth 8-19 who have not participated in APA shows level Showmanship before.
Below are a few pictures and the scores of all who participated. Congratulations to everyone.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
This photo means the world to all of us in the Old Dominion Poultry Association. They are the reason we work so hard to host these shows.
We had 80 youth exhibitors at our Poultry Show at the State Fair of Virginia this past weekend. 64 of them competed in showmanship, with several of the kids also participating in the Poster, Costume and Scholarship Contest.
Over the years we have had the privilege of watching many of these kids grow and learn more about poultry. We could not be prouder of how far they have come in that time. They continue to impress us each year with their quality show birds and expanded knowledge in showmanship.
I know it is cheesy to say the children are our future, but it is true. We are honored to be apart of their journey in this hobby by offering them multiple opportunities each year to exhibit and learn.

Well folks we did it! We survived another year hosting a Poultry Show at the State Fair of Virginia.
The show was a huge success and we have so many to thank for that! Thank you Gilmans Farm & feed for loaning us the show coops and Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair, Inc. for loaning us the extra coops we needed since our numbers just keep growing! We had 100 more birds entered this year than we had in 2024. 581 birds / 868 Entries is an impressive showing. Our three Judges did an amazing job on Saturday working through all the birds, there were so many quality birds in the show that I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to have to choose the Show Champions. Thank you also to our Show Clerks for following the judges around for hours recording the results, this is hands down one of the hardest and most rewarding jobs at a poultry show.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for helping out with everything, we had the show cleared out in an hour and fifteen minutes 😍.
If you have any pictures from the show please share them with us.
Stay tuned for more post about the fair and the different contest we held. And as always if you have any suggestions, compliments or concerns about the show we want to hear from you! Our goal to just keep making each show bigger and better and we need to hear from you in order to do that.

This year we will have our first Blue Card Show, why Blue instead of the trusty old Red you ask?
Because Red Cardstock has gotten very expensive and I am cheap when it comes to certain things so Blue it is!

Judging 4-H shows at county fairs is a great way to get out there to educate and encourage youth.
Our Board Members are always eager to work with youth because without them our hobby will die out, they are the future.
