In 2022, we had the opportunity to compete at the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational BBQ for the first time. It was our second year competing and only our 15th comp. We were too naive to realize what this competition means to so many and why. We enjoyed it, but didn’t take the time to experience it. Luckily, we had the chance to get back there again this year.
This time we got down to Lynchburg a day earlier. Load-in was delayed a bit due to 4” of rain but the crews worked tirelessly to get Wiseman Park cleaned up and ready. The hospitality shown by all of the volunteers at The Jack is second to none. They make you feel like you are a part of something special, because down here, everyone is. A couple of excellent technicians from United Rentals took care of our electrical issues and we were set up by 7pm Wednesday night.
On Thursday we were able to check out Miss Mary Bobo’s with some friends from Home Farm BBQ. We enjoyed a delicious meal while learning some of the history of Jack Daniels and the family atmosphere that is a backbone to their business. We followed that up with a tour of the distillery, learning more about their history and what makes Tennessee Whiskey. We ended the day with friends from the Midwest at a taco night hosted by Hot Daddy's BBQ.
Friday was pretty low key due to a self-induced illness but we were able to get the prep work done for Saturday. In the evening, we attended the amazing Dinner on the Hill and checked out the views overlooking Lynchburg. Again, the staff at this event treats everyone like royalty!

In 2022, some electrical distractions during the cook’s choice cost us on the big meats. We had some regrets after that year for not putting out boxes we were proud of. Regardless of our finish this year, we were happy with everything we turned in. Colie’s first try at turning in a cheesecake, cooked on the pellet grill, turned out amazing! The apple rosettes were beautiful! We said our goodbyes and left to knock a couple of hours off of the 14 hour drive home. During the drive, the results were posted.
12th Overall!
Reading the results to Colie was like listing off the who’s who of BBQ. Tremendous feeling to be a part of that group. If we never get back again, I feel we represented WI well. Congrats to Home Farm BBQ, Hot Daddy's BBQ, Smokey D's BBQ and everyone else I’m forgetting that got to walk the stage! It was an awesome weekend and one we will never forget. Photo dump below that I hope you enjoy. If you ever get a chance to visit Lynchburg, I definitely recommend it. Maybe we’ll be back there some day as well. We do have a b**g in the draw for next year 😊 🤞
