Today is the 160th anniversary of a very sobering day in #NavyHistory. #OTD legislation passed that abolished the rum ration issued to U.S. Navy sailors on board vessels.

Some sailors marked the occasion with poetry.

Here’s a throwback post from our neighbors on the Yard, the Navy Department Library:
"One of our most important jobs here at the Navy Department Library is to digitize historic documents. Many of them are found in our Rare Book Room collection. Amongst the material was this verse lamenting the end of rum rations for sailors in 1862."

Dear VA Maryland Health Care System E-News Subscriber:

Your overall satisfaction with a health care visit starts with patient check-in. VA understands the importance of this moment and will soon offer you an opportunity to check-in for appointments using your smartphone. Launching early August 2022 at the VA Maryland Health Care System, the new patient check-in application has two options: pre-check-in and mobile check-in.

Pre-check-in enables you to review your demographic information (contact, next of kin, emergency contact) on a mobile device from anywhere up to seven days before an appointment.

Mobile check-in allows you to skip the line at the check-in desk on the day of your appointment by having you check-in for your appointment using your smartphone.

Don’t have a smartphone or prefer to check-in with a staff member? No problem. You’ll always have the options to check in at the facility in-person with a staff member.

Beginning August 1, Veterans will have the option to prepare for their next appointment using precheck-in and mobile check-in.

Pre-check-in and mobile check-in are easy to use. To use pre-check-in, you’ll access a link through a text message appointment reminder after confirming an appointment. If you’ve opted out of text appointment reminders, you can restart these reminders by texting “START” to 53079 or by replying “START” to any previous text message from VA.

To check-in for an appointment with mobile check-in, once you arrive at your appointment clinic, follow these three steps:

Locate the poster titled, ‘Have an appointment? Check-in with your phone’ prominently displayed in all clinics offering mobile check-in.
Scan the QR code or text the phone number on the poster.
Wait until you get a text and click on the link to start your check-in.
For your next appointment, give these options a try, or ask your staff about how they work. Some of the benefits include:

Greater flexibility: Start your pre-check-in process from anywhere up to seven days before an appointment using your mobile device (smartphone, tablet, or computer).
Faster day-of check-in: Avoid the lines at the check-in desk on the day of a scheduled appointment.
Convenience: Easily verify your demographic information to keep your records current.
Accessibility: Enjoy an improved digital experience if you use assistive technologies.
For more information about pre-check-in or mobile check-in, visit How to Check-in With Your Smartphone for Some VA Appointments.

Honor Flight Network

The Honor Flight Network is a national network of independent Hubs working together to honor our nation’s veterans with an all-expenses paid trip to the memorials in Washington, D.C., a trip many of our veterans may not otherwise be able to take. Participation in an Honor Flight trip gives veterans the chance to share this momentous trip with other veterans, to remember friends and comrades lost, and share their stories and experiences with each other.

We went to a funeral today for a Seaman First Class William Brooks Who dies on December 7, 1941 on the battleship USS Oklahoma during the Pearl Harbor attack by Japanese forces. It was nice to see so many people there to support this man after all these years. Thank you Mr. Brooks for all you did for our country.

Saturday:

This is a reminder of the Graveside Service with Military Honors for Seaman First Class

William Brooks. This service will be held this Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Glen Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 7215 Ritchie Hwy in Glen Burnie.
There will be many attending so it is advised that you be there at least 20 minutes early. The gravesite is located straight ahead as you enter the cemetery. It is on the right side of the main road about 100 ft. before the small office. There will be a tent and chairs set up. Someone will
be directing you where to park.
The service will be conducted by the Naval Academy Chaplain and Color Guard, I believe.

Recommend you wear your organization uniform with cover or whatever will identify you as a member of our VFW Post, but more important is that you are there to honor this veteran.
Seaman First Class William Brooks was serving on the USS Oklahoma when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. His remains were only recently identified. He will be buried almost 100 years after his birth on July 19, 1922. He was 19 yrs old when he died.
Please let me know if you have any questions. His obituary is on the Chaplain's board at the post.
