Holy Smokes BBQ and Catering is a Disabled Veteran owned and operated non profit food ministry operating out of the greater Gallatin TN area. We employ recovering addicts teaching culinary and business skills and we are all about 2nd chances, because God only knows that I have been given many myself! I am a recovering alcoholic, who in a few days will celebrate 2 years of sobriety. About this time two years ago, my life was quickly downward tailspinning and out of control. I hit rock bottom when I was arrested for DUI and locked up for 4.5 days. During this time, the Holy Spirit started his work on me. First order of business was to clean your act up! I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ and accepted him as my Lord and Savior. Over the next several months, he guided me to my now wife, while encouraging me to become much closer and obedient to him. The Holy Spirit placed several callings upon me, to help those in recovery, to help them find their true God given calling in life, to feed the prisoners because even they deserve to be treated like human beings and lastly, to feed the homeless and underserved. The Holy Spirit has been preparing me my whole life for this assignment (I was so self absorbed with earthly ways to see and appreciate anything outside of my desires) and it's been quite a ride especially these last 2 years!

To all of the other BBQ trucks and trailers in the area...

I am new here, I am not here to compete with you or steal customers from you, or anything of the sort. Yeah, I know this is contrary to the whole BBQ scene which is often characterized by competition. I am not looking for fame or fortune, my reward comes on judgement day.

Holy Smokes BBQ and Catering is doing a fundraising drive so that we can go and feed the homeless and underserved in Sumner County TN and beyond.

Holy Smokes BBQ and Catering was founded by David Read, a Retired US Air Force Disabled Veteran. David started out in the Air Force loading bombs on aircraft for 9 years and finished the last 11 years of military service as a communication systems network technical controller. After retiring, he worked an additional 19 years in various rolls for many different government agencies primarily as a Computer Security Engineer. In early 2023 while deep in the grip of career burnout, declining health, an abusive relationship that he allowed to go on for far to long, an addiction to alcohol that he downplayed as only being social in nature, David decided that it was time for a change. David quit his job, cashed out a 401K and bought an RV with the intention of living fulltime in the RV and travelling the USA. Less than a month into this new adventure, this squeaky clean guy who had never been in any real trouble his whole life, got arrested for DUI while attempting to gain access to the Military installation where the RV and now Home was parked in the Fam Camp. David spent 4.5 days in the County lock up, and it was then that he was able to hear and feel the promptings of the Holy Spirit. He gave David 3 things that he had to do... 1. Clean your act up and surrender your life to Jesus Christ. 2. Feed the Homeless 3. Work with those with addictions, because you are one of them and you have been given many second chances.

Holy Smokes BBQ and Catering is a Disabled Veteran Owned and Operated 501(c)3 nonprofit food ministry that employs recovering addicts, teaching credible business and culinary skills while feeding the homeless and underserved.

In 3 weeks it will be 2 years since I have had even a sip of alcohol. I know there that everyone has a story but not many are willing to share theirs. I also know that everyone and their brother is asking for donations for this or for that, I get it, I really do!
